We had an udderly wonderful morning at Sustainable Settings last week!

A huge thank you to Brook, Rose and the entire team for welcoming Pitkin County Senior Services out to the ranch for such a memorable visit. From touring the property and learning about biodynamic agriculture to meeting sheep, chickens, and yes... milking a cow or two, it was one of those days that had everyone smiling from ear to ear.

There’s something special about spending time on a working ranch, connecting with the land, the animals, and each other. We are so grateful for the warm hospitality and all the knowledge shared with our group. Safe to say this trip was legen-dairy.

What a wick-ed good time!

This past week, Nicole from Marble Candle Company joined us for a candle making program, and the room smelled just about as lovely as it looked. Everyone created two beautiful candles to take home, and there was plenty of creativity, laughter, and good conversation flowing right along with the melted wax.

Huge thanks to Nicole for leading such a fun and hands-on afternoon. Safe to say this program really lit up the week at the Senior Center!

Tomorrow is the second installment of My Life: The Last Chapter at the Basalt Regional Library, and this week’s conversation is one we often avoid…

We’ll be talking about choices for end-of-life care with Dr. Steve Ayers, Pitkin County Coroner, and Dr. Shane Lieberman, Palliative Care Physician at Valley View Hospital. Heavy topic? Maybe. Important, compassionate, and incredibly human conversation? Absolutely.

The beautiful thing about this series is that it takes subjects that can feel overwhelming and makes them approachable, thoughtful, and even comforting. Because planning ahead isn’t about giving up. It’s about giving yourself and the people you love a little more peace of mind.

Join us tomorrow from 5–6:30 p.m. at the Basalt Regional Library. Together, we’ll have just honest conversation about navigating some of life’s most important decisions.

What does it really mean to age in place in Pitkin County?

Today’s Aspen Times includes a guest commentary from our Community Enrichment Coordinator, Lisa Guida, about the realities, challenges, and opportunities facing older adults in our community. From housing and transportation to connection and belonging, the piece explores why supporting older adults means strengthening the entire community.

One line says it best: aging in place is “the choice to live comfortably, safely and independently in your home and community.”

Thank you to The Aspen Times for helping bring attention to such an important conversation. And thank you to all of the older adults who continue to shape, strengthen, and enrich this valley every single day.

You can read the full commentary in today’s Aspen Times.

In Pitkin County, growing older is changing. It can mean staying active, being engaged and living in a place that residents have called home for years. There are challenges, such as the never-ending rise in...

We spend so much time planning for every chapter of life… careers, families, vacations, retirement. But what about the final chapter?

Tonight kicks off My Life: The Last Chapter at the Basalt Regional Library, a thoughtful and compassionate three-part workshop series focused on end-of-life planning, legal guidance, and the conversations many of us put off until “someday.” Spoiler alert: someday has a way of sneaking up on us.

This free series is about more than paperwork. It’s about peace of mind, dignity, and making things easier for the people we love. And honestly? That’s one of the greatest gifts we can leave behind.

Join us tonight from 5:00–6:30 p.m. at the Basalt Library for Session 1: Why & How We Must Plan.

Heads up, everyone, there’s another text scam making the rounds pretending to be from USPS.

The message says your package couldn’t be delivered because of an “invalid ZIP Code” and asks you to click a link to reschedule delivery. It looks official at first glance, but it’s a scam designed to steal personal or financial information.

A few easy ways to spot it:
• Suspicious web links that are not USPS.com
• Urgent “act now” language
• Delivery problems for packages you may not even be expecting

If you receive one of these texts, do not click the link. Instead, go directly to the official USPS website or app if you need to check a package.

Please consider sharing this information with friends, neighbors, and family members too. These scams are becoming more convincing, and a little awareness goes a long way.

Some weeks are quiet. This is not one of them.

This week at the Senior Center, we’re talking eye health, exploring AI superpowers, heading out to Sustainable Settings, playing Mahjong, learning about dementia warning signs, squeezing in bridge and fitness classes, and somehow still finding time for tiramisu and lava cake (because there is always time for dessert).

Whether you want to learn something new, meet new people, get out of the house, or avoid cooking lunch for a day, we’ve got something happening nearly every day this week.

Please remember to make lunch reservations 24 hours in advance by calling 970-429-6161.

Let’s taco ’bout a fabulous fiesta.

This past Tuesday, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a lunch that was nacho average Tuesday. Seafood enchiladas, Mexican rice, jicama salad, and a room full of good company made for one delicious afternoon.

And then came the music. The very talented John Ramos of Valle Musico filled the room with beautiful guitar music that had everyone smiling, swaying, and soaking it all in.

Great food, great music, and great people? That’s how we guac and roll.
