Pitkin County, Colorado – On Saturday, May 30, 2026, at approximately 2:17 PM, the Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a report of an injured hiker on Buckskin Pass in the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness Area. The hiker reportedly fell approximately 200 feet and sustained several non life threatening injuries.
Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA) was immediately alerted and deployed three field teams consisting of 12 members to assist the hiker down to the trailhead. Rescuers arrived at the trailhead at approximately 3:05 PM and began hiking toward the subject’s location, approximately three and half miles from the trailhead at an elevation of around 11,300 feet.
At approximately 3:46 PM, rescuers made contact with the subject who was already being assisted by their partner, bystanders, and the Pitkin County backcountry ranger. Mountain Rescue Aspen conducted a medical assessment, stabilized injuries, and began helping the hiker back down to the trailhead. Rescue teams and the subject arrived back at the trailhead by 5:06 PM. The subject was handed off to Aspen Ambulance at the trailhead and provided additional care upon transferring the patient to Aspen Valley Hospital. All rescuers were out of the field by 5:45 PM
The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office reminds climbers and hikers to be prepared for potential injuries in technical terrain, dress appropriately for changing mountain conditions, bring technical gear appropriate for the route, and to carry a two-way satellite communication device when traveling in remote areas where cell service may be unavailable.
