For Our Community Health Programs, Vote YES on 1A

Dear Editor,
I was drawn to Aspen for the natural beauty, as so many of us were, but as an emergency physician and now lifestyle medicine practitioner, I noticed right away there was something special here. There’s a sense of community and a real interest in being healthy, something I hadn’t recognized in other places I’ve lived. And for me, both personally and professionally, I have truly appreciated the health and community resources available. We have 70 essential non-profit as well as county organizations that add to our vibrancy and quality of life for our community and workers. They range from supporting our children, new mothers, families, and seniors, to integrated physical and mental health services, and preserving our incredible environment and natural resources. All of these wonderful and so-cherished organizations count on financial support from the Healthy Community Fund, which is a dedicated property tax created in 2002 to support our local health resources, and is due to sunset at the end of this year. Let’s uphold our strong sense of community and our commitment to outstanding health, and vote YES on ballot question 1A.

Letter to the editor from Charles Hopton

I am involved with community organizations that have been supported by the Healthy Community Fund.
Wilderness Workshop, The Aspen Buddy Program, Western Slope Veterans Coalition, to name a few.

A little girl was asked what she cared about. She said “Animals, the environment and children, because they can’t take care of themselves.’ I add our Veterans to that list.

The Healthy Community Fund helps all of those and so many other community organizations.

So many of our Community Organizations are small, volunteer groups that provide needed services.
They depend on the Healthy Community Fund.

I urge you to vote for the Healthy Community Fund Tax renewal - ballot issue 1A.

Letter to the editor from Allison Snyder Daily of Pathfinders

I am writing to ask the Pitkin County community to continue its support of the Healthy Community Fund by renewing Ballot Initiative 1A on November 6th. Pathfinders is one of many of the non-profits that benefits from the Healthy Community Fund. Much of the work we do in Pitkin County is actually funded through the HCF. It is important to Pathfinders to apply for and receive this funding.
Pathfinders provides counseling and volunteer services to those who are affected by cancer, serious illnesses --as well as all kinds of grief and loss. Loss and illness affects so many of us. Pathfinders Angels volunteers provide home-made meals for those in need who are going through illness. It is the way we support not only the one who is ill, but also the caregiver. Our counseling services very much support those with illnesses and grief and loss. If you have lost someone you love, you know how important it is to have a safe place to process and feel all of your emotions. Pathfinders is committed to all of this-and even more. We are dedicated to this community. The Healthy Community Fund enables us to do what we do.
Stay committed to making this amazing community and all it offers. Please vote YES on Ballot Initiative 1A to renew the Healthy Community Fund.

Executive Director, Pathfinders

Letter to the Editor from Rebecca Binion

I am writing to ask the Pitkin County community to continue its support of the impactful Healthy Community Fund by renewing Ballot Initiative 1A on November 6th. This fund is such an important indication of the county’s commitment to community health and is critical to the programming of many of our local nonprofits. Our hope, as long-term recipients of this funding, is that it will be renewed to continue the community commitment to health.
We are grateful, beyond words, for support from this fund – it is critical for us to be able to deliver on Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountain’s mission in the Roaring Fork Valley. Our Glenwood Health Center has been providing reproductive health services to residents of the valley and beyond for nearly 40 years.
47 % of our Glenwood patients fall below 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Line and 57% of our patients don’t have any form of insurance or Medicaid. We play an essential role in the continuum of health care and act as a referral source with other community providers and schools. PPRM provides high quality reproductive health care for men, women and teens regardless of ability to pay.
Our patients are more concerned now than ever they will lose access to the services we provide.
Please stay committed to making this a healthy, safe and resilient community. Vote YES on Ballot Initiative 1A to renew the Healthy Community Fund.

Thank you,
Rebecca Binion
