Watson Divide is now OPEN. We appreciate everyone’s patience during the weather-related delays in reopening.

Please drive with care and obey posted speed limits. Help keep your roads in good condition by avoiding tire spinning and excessive acceleration on dirt roads.

Dirt Road Driving Tips:
• Slow down- high speeds create washboarding and dust
• Avoid spinning tires when starting or climbing hills
• Increase following distance
• Drive smoothly and avoid sudden braking or acceleration
• Remember: moisture and weather can quickly change road conditions

Thank you for helping protect and maintain our county roads for everyone.

Watch for workers, equipment, and changing traffic patterns
Allow extra travel time when possible

Winter hasn’t exactly felt like winter this year… but winter driving is still a thing!

As we move toward spring, changing temperatures can still create slick and unpredictable road conditions. Warm afternoons followed by freezing nights can quickly turn wet pavement into black ice, especially in the early morning and late evening.

Listen to some Safe Driving Tips from Dustin Wright - Pitkin County Road & Bridge Operations Supervisor:

Huge thanks to the hardworking road and bridge crews keeping our roads safe all winter long! 👏

Road and Bridge crews are out cleaning up roads after the recent storm that brought 2–10 inches of snow across the county. This video highlights operator Brian Epps skillfully operating a motor grader to restore safe driving conditions. With more snowfall expected this week, drivers should slow down, maintain safe following distances, and never pass snow removal equipment.
