Astoria, this is your time! Oregon Black Pioneers' walking tour season is almost over. Portland tours are sold out but Astoria has tickets available! Each Black History Walking Tour explores locations all around Oregon, stopping at places connected to each area’s African American history. Themes include resilience, perseverance, Black-owned businesses, community change, and civil rights. All tours begin at 10:00am.

Sat. Aug. 29, 10-12am, meet at the Flavel House for an Urban Tree Walk with Jennifer Killian, an OSU Urban Forestry Specialist. She will showcase prominent trees in Astoria - such as our very own 140-year-old Flavel House Sequoia Tree! Approx.1.5 mile walk over even terrain, standing throughout, so wear your walking shoes and bring some water as you explore the Urban Trees of Astoria! Happy Flavel Friday! 😍

Here's to all the Clatsop County teachers getting ready for their students this week. Thank you for all you do - you make a difference! Here is a happy photo of two Astoria High School students, Reta Clark and Darlene Aho, with Mr. John Nellor. Mr. Nellor was an English teacher at AHS in 1953-54, and moved into administration with the title "Activity Co-ordinator" in 1955. In 1956 he was listed as the "technical supervisor" and teacher advisor for the Zephyrus. After his years at the high school, he became the city editor for the Astorian Budget newspaper. (By 1963 he had moved to Vancouver, Washington with his wife Maxine, and died in 1984.)
