An exciting runaway! Courageous conduct of Tom Rawlings! Last evening a horse owned by Capt. Gray, attached to a cart, suddenly bolted. Tom Rawlings sprang forward, and caught the horse by the bridle, but was thrown down. Without letting go the bridle he jumped up instantly and bravely held on, stopping the animal. The cart was uninjured, but the horse was hurt on the back by the shaft, and the plucky rescuer was slightly injured in the right knee.

Yesterday morning a terrible accident occurred on board the government steamer Mendel, while lying at Fort Stevens, John Lindstrom, one of the deck hands of the tug, went to let go the stern line, and in some unaccountable manner got his right hand caught in the bite of the rope, the tug starting up at the same time, the line tightening and snapping the hand off at the wrist and dropping it into the water. Dr. Walker, who was on board, immediately gave surgical assistance to the unfortunate man. On arriving at Fort Canby the wounded man was taken to the post hospital, and Post Surgeon Raymond and Dr. Walker amputated about two inches of the stump, so that the arteries could be secured. Gen. Carlin instructed the officers to care for Mr. Lindstrom at the post hospital as long as treatment was necessary.

Some sneak thief broke into his saloon last night and touched it off for fifty big dollars. The thief is suspected, and he had better go slow or he will get a dose of what he deserves, lead.
