Today, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

This year, the local Peace Officer Memorial held in downtown San Luis Obispo was beautifully hosted by the San Luis Obispo Police Department. The ceremony carried special significance as it marked five years since we lost Detective Luca Benedetti while serving a search warrant.

Detective Benedetti holds a special place in our hearts here at the Atascadero Police Department. Before joining the San Luis Obispo PD, Luca served with our department, and we continue to honor his memory, his dedication to serving others, and the lasting impact he made on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Today, we remember the fallen, honor those who continue to serve, and keep their families and loved ones in our thoughts. 💙🖤

City Breaks Ground on First Phase of Public Safety Facilities Project

After six years of planning, collaboration, and community engagement, the City of Atascadero is proud to announce the start of construction on the first phase of its Public Safety Facilities (PSF) Project, with work now underway on comprehensive renovations at Fire Station No. 2 and a new building for dispatch operations at the Police Department.

The PSF Project has been strategically designed as a multi-phase project to replace and renovate existing public safety facilities, including Fire Station No. 1, Fire Station No. 2, and the Police Department. The goal of this project is to construct highly functional, energy efficient, and resource conscious facilities to strengthen emergency services capabilities across the community, prepare for future growth, and meet the health and safety needs of Fire and Police personnel. This first phase represents a major milestone, bringing to life long-envisioned improvements that will enhance service delivery, operational efficiency, and coordination among public safety personnel.

“This moment reflects years of thoughtful planning and partnership,” said Mayor Bourbeau. “Breaking ground on these first facilities is an exciting step forward, and we are incredibly grateful to our community for making it possible through their support of the voter-approved sales tax measure, Measure D-20.”

Measure D-20 has provided a stable and dedicated funding source to invest in critical public safety infrastructure while maintaining other essential City services. Community input has remained a cornerstone throughout the process, helping shape a project that reflects local needs and priorities.

The upgrades to the Police Department and renovations to Fire Station No. 2 will provide modern, purpose-built spaces designed to support today’s public safety demands, improve response times, and ensure first responders have the tools and environment necessary to serve effectively. Specifically, the Police Department improvements include safe ingress/egress for police vehicles, locker room and restroom improvements, creation of additional office and storage space, upgrades to the building, and a new building for dispatch operations.

“This is a significant step in delivering facilities that match the professionalism and dedication of our public safety teams,” said Police Chief Dan Suttles. “These investments will directly benefit the safety and well-being of our community for years to come.”

Construction on Fire Station No. 1 will begin this summer, with a public groundbreaking event scheduled for Monday, June 8 at 3:00 p.m. This phase of the project will replace the existing 6,000 sq. ft., 70+ year-old station. The new station, totaling approximately 18,000 sq ft., will house all administration functions for the Fire Department and will include enhanced safety features such as pull-through engine bays, decontamination areas, and security components. Fire Station No. 1 will also house the City’s new Emergency Operations Center, capable of providing a safe and functional workspace to manage short or long-term Citywide emergencies and support both a local and multi-agency/multi-jurisdiction response in the event of a major disaster or emergency.

The City extends its sincere appreciation to residents, stakeholders, and partners who have supported the project over the past six years. Their commitment has been instrumental in moving this effort forward and bringing this long-anticipated investment to fruition.

🚨 April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month 🚨

Atascadero community — this is your reminder, and it’s an important one.

Every time you pick up your phone while driving, you’re taking your eyes off the road. Even for a few seconds, that choice can change lives forever.

The Atascadero Police Department is urging all drivers to stay focused: eyes forward, hands on the wheel. Distractions like texting, checking apps, adjusting your touchscreen, eating, or even changing the radio can have devastating consequences.

“Distracted driving continues to put everyone on the road at risk,” said APD Commander Matt Chesson. “When drivers take their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, lives can change forever. Safety starts with each of us. Put the phone down and help people get home safely.”

Here’s the reality:

⚠️ Over 71% of drivers say distracted driving is their biggest safety concern
⚠️ 158 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in California in 2023 — and that number is rising

And enforcement is happening. Throughout April, officers will be actively watching for violations of California’s hands-free law.

📵 Know the law:

Holding your phone while driving is illegal — even at a red light. That includes texting, calling, or using apps. Violations can lead to fines and points on your record.

Make the safe choice every time you drive:

✔️ Put your phone away — out of reach and on silent
✔️ Set your GPS and adjust everything before you start driving
✔️ Keep both hands on the wheel
✔️ Don’t eat, groom, or multitask behind the wheel
✔️ Speak up if someone else is driving distracted
✔️ If it’s urgent, pull over safely — no message is worth a life

This isn’t just about avoiding a ticket. It’s about protecting your life, your passengers, and everyone else on the road.

No text, call, or notification is worth the risk. Put it down. Drive focused. 🚗

During Dispatcher Appreciation Week, April 12–18, we pause to recognize and sincerely thank you for the critical role you serve in protecting and supporting our community. Though your work is often unseen, it is never unfelt. Every call you answer and every decision you make has a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Anjanette, Adam, Julia, Shandi, Kayla, Alisha, Marina & Cheyenne, you are the calm voice in moments of fear and uncertainty, offering reassurance when it is needed most. In the face of urgency and pressure, you remain composed, focused, and compassionate, guiding callers through difficult situations while coordinating the response that keeps everyone safe. Your strength lies not only in your skill but in the empathy you have while carrying such an immense responsibility.

Behind every response in the field is your steady presence, ensuring that help arrives where and when it’s needed. The long hours, the emotional toll, and the constant readiness you maintain do not go unnoticed. Your dedication, resilience, and professionalism are the foundation of public safety in our community.

During this week of appreciation, and every day beyond it, please know how valued you are. Your work makes a difference in ways that cannot always be seen but are always felt. Thank you for your commitment, your courage, and your unwavering service.

With heartfelt gratitude, thank you for all that you do.
