Atascadero, California is about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and is in the heart of San Luis Obispo County’s Central Coast Wine Country. Surrounded by Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo, Atascadero is located on the 101 between State Highway 41 and 46. San Luis Obispo County is home to Cal State Poly Tech, gorgeous beaches, renowned wineries, Hearst Castle, bustling farmers markets, and a fabulous way of life.
Founded in 1913 by magazine publisher E.G. Lewis, Atascadero’s commercial hub was designed around the Mercantile on El Camino Real, the main throughway of town. The Mercantile then and still today hosts retail stores, services, and lodging for residents and visitors.
The J.A. Hier-Johnson Building was built in 1923 and was one of the first commercial buildings outside of the Mercantile. The U.S. Post Office Building and the iconic Carlton Hotel were all built during the same era on El Camino Real in the same Old World Italian architectural style found throughout the Central Coast.
The Atascadero Historical Society operates a Museum, Hattie Prather Rose Garden, and offers tours of the historic City Hall.
