Guinea Paper Wasps (Polistes exclamans) are fairly common here in southeast Texas. Adults feed on nectar, but they hunt soft-bodied insects, like caterpillars, to feed to their larvae in the nest. They can be occasional pollinators, as well. Most people view them as pests, as they have a painful sting, but unless you threaten their nest, they largely ignore you. While I don’t like losing butterfly caterpillars, I also don’t interfere in the natural interactions of native species. Part of having a wildlife garden is letting nature take its course, and enjoying the variety of interactions that unfold.

I’m sitting out by the pond under the patio umbrella, and enjoying a light afternoon rain shower on the garden. I look up and these little fella is staring back at me, lol. Apparently I have a opossum cave amongst the rocks in my pond.

The Fall Hummingbird migration has started. This Ruby-throated Hummingbird has staked a claim to part of our backyard - a variety of flowers and the feeders are on her daily menu.
