On January 2, 2026, Carlos Rondon was sentenced to 122 months with the Department of Corrections after pleading no contest to three counts of aggravated indecent liberties involving three separate children.

This case was investigated by the Atchison Kansas Police Department with the investigation continuing up until the plea in late 2025. The case started with two children coming forwarded and reporting that the defendant had touched them inappropriately. However, by the time the case was headed to jury trial, a third child came forward and reported similar conduct.

Throughout the investigation, two other victims were identified and testified in open court that the defendant had also touched them inappropriately when they were children in the early 1990s.

The County Attorney's Office filed a motion requesting that the jury be allowed to hear evidence not only from the three victims in the case, but also from the two victims from the 1990s. Before the district court ruled on the motion, the defendant entered a plea.

The plea agreement was based on several factors including consideration on behalf of the victims and their family.

The defendant was 70 years old when he heard the sentence. He was also ordered to register as a s*x offender for the remainder of his life.

I want to personally say that I truly appreciate the patience and trust the family gave my office and law enforcement. I know the family wanted justice and, in this case, it took years. But the time was not wasted and allowed law enforcement and I to build a case that finally got us to this point. I know we cannot bring your loved ones back, and I am truly sorry for your loss. It was an honor to serve in this role and to stand beside you on the day the sentence was pronounced. I wish you and your family peace and healing.

Yesterday, a juvenile s*x offender case was completed in District Court.

Two juveniles were charged in connection with an investigation in which a five-year-old girl and a six-year-old girl reported being s*xually assaulted.

The first juvenile offender, L.S., was charged and adjudicated for the offense of lewd and lascivious behavior and received a sentence of 6 months probation, which is the standard sentence under the juvenile justice code.

The second juvenile offender, K.C, heard his sentence yesterday regarding his adjudication for the offense of aggravated indecent liberties with a child but as it related to both the five-year-old victim and the six-year-old victim.

After a two-hour hearing, the State asked for the maximum sentence of incarceration with the juvenile department of corrections. The court was authorized to order 2 years up to when K.C. turns 22.5 years old as a term of incarceration with the juvenile department of corrections. The victims asked that K.C. receive a term of incarceration. K.C. asked for probation.

The District Court Judge granted K.C.'s request for probation and ordered that he serve 12 months of probation and complete a s*x offender treatment program among other conditions.

Yesterday, a District Court Judge sentenced Anthony Akins-Bomhoff to serve 22 months with the Department of Corrections for committing the crimes of Theft, Criminal Damage to Property, and Criminal Trespass.

This was after a jury found the defendant guilty of these charges after hearing evidence that the defendant and a co-defendant stole a trailer around midnight on April 17, 2024, from a home located in the city of Atchison. The duo staked out the residence and even cut the power to a home security camera before stealing the trailer. Officers with the Atchison Kansas Police Department immediately responded and apprehended the pair a few minutes later. The trailer was returned to the owner.

The defendant had just been released from prison and was on parole for the crimes of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Criminal Threat when he committed this crime.

In August of 2024, the defendant, who was on bond for the above case, also stole a second trailer from a resident in the city of Atchison. The defendant entered a no contest to the plea to the charge and was sentenced to 16 months with the Department of Corrections. The court, although denying the defendant's request for probation, ordered the sentence to run concurrently to the first case. In ordering that the cases run concurrently, the court overruled the State's request that the two cases run consecutively. The State is respectfully appealing the decision.
The second trailer theft case was also investigated by the Atchison Kansas Police Department.

12/13/2023

Yesterday, Walter Taylor was ordered to serve 21 months with the Department of Corrections for committing the crime of Residential Burglary. This conviction was the result of a very active investigation from the Atchison Kansas Police Department in which they uncovered that the defendant had also committed numerous thefts and found evidence that he was in possession of a firearm in violation of Kansas law.

Per Kansas law, the defendant was granted probation for the convictions in the two additional cases where he was convicted of Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and three counts of felony Theft. However, the Court ran all three cases consecutive to each other, which means that Taylor will serve the 21 months in prison, then receive probation in the two remaining cases, and if he fails on probation could go back to prison for an additional 30 months.

The reason that Taylor faced going to prison for the crime of Residential Burglary was because under Kansas law there is a special rule which provides that when a defendant has three or more prior felony convictions and commits the crime of residential burglary the sentence is presumed imprisonment. The Court imposed the application of that special rule and denied Taylor's request for probation.
