Two gold awards were presented to Officers of the Atchison Police Department at the annual Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Valor Awards ceremony. Master Patrol Officer Wyatt Richardson and the department’s Special Response Team each received gold valor awards. Both awards were the result of actions taken by Atchison Police officers during a hostage situation that occurred in the 500 bock North 9th Street in January 2025.

Officer Richardson was the first officer to arrive at the scene where a person with a gun was breaking into an apartment. After shots were fired at the arriving officer, he was able to hold his position and contain the suspect who had fled into an apartment where he held a hostage for hours. Soon thereafter, Officer Richardson was able to help several residents, including a small child, get out of an adjoining apartment and out of harms way. Special Response Teams from the Atchison Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were able to get other apartment residents out of harms way and eventually rescue the hostage.

The KHP and KBI response teams were also recognized at the ceremony with gold awards with recognition given to the collaborative efforts of the three teams working together that saved lives.

Congratulations to our very own Hometown Hero - MPO Alex Moore!

is proud to recognize this week’s Hometown Hero: City of Atchison Master Patrol Police Officer Alex Moore, nominated by his wife, Jodi Moore.

Jodi shared that Alex’s service to the community goes far beyond his role as a police officer—it’s a reflection of who he is at his core. An Atchison/Denton, Kansas native, Alex has deep roots in the community he now serves and protects. Before his career in law enforcement, he also proudly served in the United States Air Force, demonstrating his commitment to serving others and his country long before joining the Atchison Police Department. He is deeply committed to building trust, showing compassion, and being someone, the community feels comfortable approaching. Whether it’s a child asking for a high five, a teenager stopping to say hello, or a resident expressing gratitude, Alex consistently leaves a lasting impression on those he serves.

One of the most impactful ways Alex gives back is through the 'Heroes Helping Program' he started. Through this initiative, he has helped hundreds of children begin the school year with new school supplies and shoes, ensuring they feel confident and prepared. According to Jodi, seeing those kids smile is what drives him—it’s never about recognition, but about making a difference.

Alex takes great pride in protecting and serving the City of Atchison, Kansas Local Government, carrying himself with integrity and respect in every interaction. To many, he is Officer Moore, but to the community, he is also a mentor, a role model, and a positive force in countless lives.

Thank you, Officer Moore, for your dedication and service—and thank you to Jodi Moore for this heartfelt nomination. Your impact on the Atchison community does not go unnoticed.

Proudly partnered with Lentz Express Catering and Wilson Tire — serving our communities together.

Congratulations to our March Ace of the Month, Officer Malik Wedlow! Malik has been an employee of the City of Atchison for 2 1/2 years and currently serves as a Patrol Officer II in the Atchison Kansas Police Department. Malik was nominated for Ace of the Month with the following submission:

"I am writing to formally commend Officer Malik Wedlow for the exceptional professionalism and empathy shown to my family following an incident this past week. Although it was a very distressing situation for us, Officer Wedlow arrived at my house after I had called in a report and immediately put us at ease. He was patient with my son, listened attentively to our concerns, and explained the legal process in a way that was clear and reassuring. It is rare to encounter such a perfect balance of efficiency and genuine kindness. He even went to his squad car and gave my daughter 2 stuffed animals. Officer Wedlow's conduct reflected the very best of your police department, and we feel much more supported during this difficult time because of his intervention. We are truly grateful for the service provided."

Malik wins a $50 gift card to any local business and the Ace Trophy for the entire month. He is also in the running for Ace of the Year.

Great job Malik!

Please congratulate our February Aces of the Month, Master Patrol Officer Miguel Monteclaro and Master Patrol Officer Steven Robertson!

Steven has been with the Atchison Police Department for just over 4 years, and Miguel will reach his 4 years of employment with the department in May of this year. Both officers have an extraordinary work ethic and a calm professionalism that they bring to every call. These gentlemen received the following nomination for the Ace of the Month:

"The Atchison Police Department was called to the MOKAN bridge for a citizen in distress. These officers spoke to the citizen and talked him into coming off the side of the bridge. The officers had a calm and heartfelt conversation with the gentleman which led to these guys buying him a drink and giving him a ride home. These officers did not just "do their job", they went above and beyond to help a neighbor in crisis."

Congratulations to both Steven and Miguel! It is not just about the badge; it is about the heart you put into the community. Congratulations on being recognized for your calmness, empathy, and compassion.

Both officers will receive a $50 gift card to a local business, share the gorgeous Ace trophy for the month, and be in the running for Ace of the Year!

On this National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we would like to extend our gratitude to our wonderful law enforcement officers of the Atchison Police Department.

Every day, these officers, as well as officers across the nation, put on their badge, not knowing what they are going to face. From rescuing owls to high conflict calls for service, from unlocking car doors to shots fired, these officers are determined to protect and serve to the best of their ability.

Let’s take a moment to honor those who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe and never forget those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. 💙
