Congratulations to our June Ace of the Month, Corporal Garrett Loroff! Garrett has been with the Atchison Police Department for 18 years and currently serves as the School Resource Officer for USD 409. Garrett not only helps keep our schools safe, but he also builds trust, respect, and positive relationships with students and staff alike. Garrett also goes beyond his duties by always offering a listening ear and greeting everyone with a smile. He is known for keeping our schools safe and for always being approachable, kind, and supportive.

Garrett received the following nomination:
"I am nominating Officer Garrett Loroff for Ace of the Month for his commendable service as the School Resource Officer during a recent storm as school buses were called back so student riders would have shelter. My son, who is non-verbal and has autism, was on one of those buses. He doesn't always do so well with breaks in routine, so he didn't want to get off the bus at a different location than normal.
With tornado sirens wailing, rain pouring, lightning flashing and hail falling all around, Garrett stayed with my son until I could get there to assist. Fortunately, the storm subsided just as I arrived, and my son, safe and sound, exited the bus and went home with me no problems. Garrett was calm and patient with him even under those circumstances and said that no matter what, he was going to ride out the storm with my son on that bus.
The men and women of the Atchison Police Department perform services like these every day and night, and I'm sure it's easy for people to take that for granted; however, it certainly hits differently when it's your child's safety and well-being benefitting from the bravery, compassion and commitment of police officers like Garrett Loroff. Thank you, Garrett...so very much.

Great job, Officer Loroff!
Garrett will receive the Ace trophy for the month of June, a $50 gift card to any local business of his choice and be in the running for Ace of the Year for 2026.

Water Service Update - 1200 Block Kansas & 13th Street from Main to Santa Fe

As a follow-up to this morning's notification, the crew was able to isolate the leak without shutting down the water main so there will be no service disruption and no need to flush lines at home.

Water Service Notification

Crews are repairing a water leak in the 1200 block of Kansas Ave. Customers in that block in addition to those along 13th Street from Main to Santa Fe St. should expect a short (estimated less than 2 hours) shutdown later this morning.

Once service is restored, it is generally recommended to run the cold water in the bathtub for several minutes to make sure any air or debris in the lines is flushed out. If using a different faucet, it is best to remove the aerator screen prior to flushing.

An update will be posted once service has been restored.

Shortly after noon today, Atchison Fire Department was contacted by Atchison Tubular Manufacturing, located in Atchison’s industrial business park west of the city, regarding a chemical discovered in a storage cabinet that had deteriorated into a volatile state.

Upon arrival, crews found that the facility’s safety team had already moved the product to a safe, open area of the plant. Following an investigation, AFD and the Atchison Kansas Police Department determined that the Leavenworth County Bomb Squad should be requested to respond and eliminate any potential threat.

A safety zone was established with assistance from Atchison County EMS and Atchison County Emergency Management. Once the Bomb Squad arrived, they determined that the safest course of action was to detonate the container and volatile chemical. After the container and chemical were detonated, responders confirmed that the threat had been eliminated.

The management of this facility did a great job identifying this hazard and contacting authorities. At no time was there any danger to the public beyond the originally established safety zone, and no broader evacuation of citizens was necessary. No injuries were reported.
