Meet the latest addition to the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department's fleet: T-Rex Ladder 1 🚒🦖

After a year and a half of manufacturing, the truck was "pushed in" to service at Fire Station 1 in February. The 115-foot articulating aerial platform will enhance emergency response by enabling greater access to high-rise buildings, complex rooflines, and confined access points.

Athens-Clarke County Transit has been driving Athens forward for 50 (‼️) years.

The 16 GMC coaches pictured here rolled into service in 1976. In the first year of operation, boardings averaged 900/day, and by 1992, 15 million people had boarded The Bus. To date, an estimated 50,000,000 passengers have benefitted from Transit services.

Congratulations to Andrew Saunders, who has been appointed Deputy Manager of ACCGov as of June 8, 2026. Saunders has served as Interim Assistant Manager since July 22, 2024, and has worked with ACCGov for nearly 20 years.

"I am grateful to Manager Cowell for his confidence in me and for the opportunity to serve in this capacity," said Saunders. "Having spent nearly 20 years with this organization, I have a deep appreciation for what we do and a genuine excitement about what we can accomplish together in this next chapter."

Note that the final FY27 budget meetings / Taxpayer Bill of Rights Hearings take place this week: tonight at 6:00 PM and Thursday, June 4 at 6:00 PM, both at City Hall. The Commission is scheduled to vote on the budget next Tuesday, June 9.

The FY2027 Mayor’s Recommended Budget for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 for ACCGov has been submitted to the Commission for review. The budget is balanced and includes a General Fund Operating and Capital Budget that totals $212.5 million.

Additional information, including the full FY27 Mayor’s Recommended Budget, is available at www.accgov.com/budget. A summary section is also available as part of the overall budget document.

Before the Mayor and Commission finalizes the FY27 Budget, the Commission is scheduled to review the FY27 Mayor’s Recommended Budget at a series of meetings between now and June. View a full schedule at www.accgov.com/budget.

The Commission is scheduled to adopt the FY27 Budget at a Special Called Session on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at 6:00 PM at City Hall.

A copy of the FY27 Mayor’s Recommended Budget is also available for public inspection during normal business hours at the Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter Street) and the Clerk of Commission’s Office in City Hall (301 College Avenue, Suite 204).

ICYMI: Several races from the May 19 General Primary / Nonpartisan General Election are headed into a Runoff Election on Tuesday, June 16. 🗳️

Three local races - Mayor, Commissioner District 5, and Commissioner District 9 - will be on the ballot, along with a number of primary races on each party's ballot.

View an individualized sample ballot at mvp.sos.ga.gov, or a composite ballot at accgov.com/sampleballot.

Advance voting will be held June 8 - June 12 at three locations. Absentee ballot applications are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, June 5.

Wet conditions have led to improvement in drought conditions across north and central Georgia over the last week. While areas of D3-D4 drought continue to shrink across our area, rainfall totals through the last several months remains well below normal and below surface soils remain dry.
