OHIO Patton College of Education

OHIO Patton College of Education The Patton College prepares educators, practitioners, and human service professionals to be leaders.

We offer traditional classroom-based and online programs to enable our students to serve as change agents, meeting diverse human and social needs. At The Patton College, we prepare educators, practitioners and human service professionals to be leaders. The Patton College has more than 100 faculty members serving more than 2,100 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. Housed in Patton Hall, we hav

e a proud history spanning over 125 years. In 1886, we became the first public teacher preparation program in Ohio. The state’s first kindergarten opened on our campus in 1907, and in 1948, Dr. George Hill organized the Department of Guidance, Counseling and Student Personnel. In 1997 the Department of Educational Studies was founded, expanding the College’s departments to three. On July 1, 2010, The Patton College became the home of several excellent programs previously housed in the College of Health and Human Services, creating two new departments. Today, the College comprises five departments: Counseling and Higher Education, Human and Consumer Science Education, Educational Studies, Recreation and Sport Pedagogy, and Teacher Education. Our faculty’s expertise in research, teaching and outreach extends internationally to four continents. We have distinguished ourselves by establishing partnerships to address social, economic and educational issues affecting communities worldwide and impacting American students’ ability to learn in our public schools. While we strive to maintain a close connection with the community and region, the College’s educational excellence reaches across the world to such places as Honduras, Ghana, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. We established an Instructional Technology program at the University of Jordan in Amman and Saudi Arabia’s Alfaisal International Academy that mirrors the one our College offers.

📍 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? | OHIO Eastern Alumni Series

This week’s alumni spotlight features Julian Funari, a sixth-grade teacher with Martins Ferry City Schools and a 2015 graduate of OHIO Eastern.

After graduating from Martins Ferry High School in 2011, Julian enrolled in the Teacher Education program at OHIO Eastern, earning a bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education with concentrations in English Language Arts and Social Studies.

When asked how his degree from OHIO Eastern helped shape where he is today, Julian reflected on the faculty who helped guide him throughout his educational journey.

“I feel as though my time at Ohio University Eastern in the Patton College of Education program greatly prepared me for the exciting career of teaching. The professors truly cared about their students in that they worked tirelessly to help each student succeed. That effort from my former professors reflects in my own teaching philosophies used in my sixth-grade classroom.”

Following graduation, Julian began working as a substitute teacher with Martins Ferry City Schools in 2016 before being hired as a full-time sixth grade teacher in 2019, a role he continues to serve today. Since graduating from OHIO Eastern, he has also earned a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

“I am forever grateful for the time spent at Ohio University Eastern.”

Thank you, Julian, for the impact you continue to make in the lives of local students and for carrying forward the commitment to education that helped shape your own journey.
