It consists of 1.7 square miles; 1,070 acres and is situated between Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers. The Borough maintains 12.91 miles of sewer and 13.13 miles of highway. Athens Borough's governing body is made up of an elected Mayor and seven Council members who have the responsibility of decision making for the town. The Borough retains a full time Police Department consisting of a Policy Chief/Zoning Office, three full-time Patrol Officers and three part-time Patrol officers. The Athens community is served by two all-volunteer Fire Departments (Diahoga Hose Company No. 6 and Protection Hose Company No. 1) with approximately 80 volunteer firefighters and an EMA Director. Athens Borough provides Police and Fire protection twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The Public Works Department consisting of a Leader and two Class A Operators is responsible for street repairs, sewer repairs, building repairs, equipment and vehicle repairs as well as ground maintenance. The Borough manager/Street Superintendent supervises all Municipal department and projects, serves the Athens Borough citizens in all aspects relating to the Borough and maintains good relations with the news media and community. Athens Borough Secretary-Treasurer implements and maintains accounting procedures as set by Council, maintains responsibility of the Borough's revenues and expenditures and processes/files all documents relating to the Borough. The Administrative Assistant assists in answering inquiries from the Public and maintains the filing system for the Police Department. The Athens Borough council and Municipals employees thrive on providing supreme service to the Athens community.
