Athens Municipal Water Authority Developing water resources for the future of Athens, Texas since 1957. The project was completed at the end of May 1963.

The Athens Municipal Water Authority (“AMWA”) was formed by the Texas Legislature in 1957 as a Conservation & Reclamation District for the purpose of providing a source of water supply for municipal, domestic, and industrial use and providing plants and facilities for the treatment of raw water. Lake Athens, formerly known as Flat Creek Reservoir, is on Flat Creek in the Neches River basin eigh

t miles east of Athens in Henderson County (centered at 32°12' N, 94°43' W). The project is owned and operated by the Athens Municipal Water Authority for municipal water supply, flood regulation, and recreation. Construction began on September 25, 1961, and the dam closure was made and deliberate impoundment of water started on November 1, 1962. The reservoir has a capacity of 32,840 acre-feet and a surface area of 1,520 acres at the spillway crest elevation of 440 feet above mean sea level. AMWA is funded by the taxpayers within the city limits of Athens. The five AMWA board members reside within the city limits of Athens and are elected by the city of Athens voters.

The Lake Athens swim area will be closed on Monday, May 12, 2025, for vegetation treatment.

It will reopen on Tuesday, May 13.
