The Athens City Council approved four agreements Monday, June 22, intended to help bring new single-family homes to the former R.C. Fisher School property in North Athens.

The agreements are with JAB Realty Investments, LLC, and cover four City-owned lots in R.C. Fisher Estates. Each agreement is tied to construction of one home.

R.C. Fisher Estates was created after the City purchased the former school property to remove the aging building for safety reasons and prepare the site for residential use.

Under the agreements, each lot serves as the development incentive, with the value estimated at $25,000 per lot.

City officials have said additional housing is an important part of planning for future growth, supporting neighborhoods and helping make Athens a place where more people who work here can also live here.

The City of Athens is applying for up to $21 million in state grant funding to help improve major parts of the City’s water system.

If awarded, the funding could be used for aging water infrastructure, including the raw water intake at Lake Athens, the water treatment plant and the high-pressure plane.

In plain terms, these are parts of the system that help move water from Lake Athens, treat it and send it through the City with the pressure needed for reliable service.

The City Council approved the application process Monday, June 22, through the Texas Water Development Board’s Water Supply Infrastructure Grant program.
