Birdie Thornton Center The Birdie Thornton Center is a (501)(c) non-profit organization serving Adults with Intellectual Disabilities. Our services are monitored by ADMH and Medicaid.

The Birdie Thornton Center is committed to securing for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to choose and realize their goals of how they live, learn, work, and play. We are funded through the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH), Medicaid, local government municipalities, and other agencies such as The United Way of Athens-Limestone County.

Did you know that anyone with a disability can obtain an all access pass to every National Park in the country? That pass can also include family members traveling with the card holder. The Carpenter family just had a wonderful Wyoming trip to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.

Disability Resource Network will be awarding two $1,500.00 scholarships. This scholarship is for graduating seniors with a disability residing in: Colbert, Cullman, Dekalb, Franklin, Jackson, Limestone, Lawrence, Lauderdale, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, or Winston counties.

Qualifications:

Have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA

Must have a disability

Must be a 2026 graduating High School Senior

Applications open 3/23/2026

Applications due 4/23/2026

Scholarships will be presented at the Sponsor/ Partner Reception in May

We had such a wonderful day at our annual Birdie Thornton Valentine Dance on Friday, Everyone looked Fantastic!!!! They absolutely love getting all dressed up and dancing the day away!!! We can’t thank all of our Staff, Make a way Foundation, Civitan Ladies ,and all the other volunteers we had, enough for all of the hard work everyone put in to make this day possible!! Thank you Athens First Baptist Church for providing the Life Center again for us this year. We would like to thank Olive Garden, Lawlers BBQ in Athens, Logan’s Roadhouse in Athens , Big Bob Gibson in Decatur, Holaway’s in Decatur and Gin House in Elkmont for your wonderful donations!! With everyone’s generous donations, hard work and a lot of dancing , it was a huge success to us all!!
