This year, Beacon is proud to celebrate two graduates! Over the past two days, we have been highlighting each graduate individually in alphabetical order by their first name.

Today, we celebrate James!

James joined Beacon in 2014 and has spent the past several years building friendships, developing new skills, and making lasting memories. Known for his warm personality, big smile, and unforgettable bear hugs, James has made a positive impact on everyone around him.

One of James' favorite activities at Beacon was swimming. Whether during class or extra swim sessions, he loved being in the water and could spend hours floating and relaxing. Throughout his time at Beacon, James also participated in job training opportunities and worked toward greater independence as he prepared for life after graduation.

After graduation, James is looking forward to sleeping in, attending a day program this fall, and continuing his search for supported employment and volunteer opportunities.

James has taught us the value of being present, intentional, and true to yourself. His humor, determination, and kind spirit will be greatly missed by his classmates and the Beacon staff.

James, we are so proud of all you have accomplished and cannot wait to see what the future holds for you. Congratulations on your graduation and best wishes on this exciting next chapter!

This year, Beacon is proud to celebrate two graduates!

Over the next few days, we will be highlighting each graduate individually in alphabetical order by their first name.

First up is Ian!

Ian's journey with Beacon began in 2008 as a preschool student and has been filled with growth, friendship, and unforgettable memories. Over the years, he has touched the lives of countless classmates, teachers, and staff with his bright smile, kind spirit, and love for music and gym class.

From learning to use a communication device and building important life skills to participating in choir performances and exploring the community, Ian has accomplished so much during his time at Beacon. He has shown us the importance of perseverance, joy, and connection.

After graduation, Ian is looking forward to spending time with family, relaxing at home, enjoying his papaw's sweet tea, and joining the Athens Community Singers.

Ian, we are incredibly proud of all you have achieved. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and for making Beacon a brighter place.

We wish you all the best in this exciting next chapter!

Congratulations, Ian!

It was a memorable day at Beacon School as students from every classroom were recognized during our annual Awards Ceremony. Students were recognized for their growth, achievements, and hard work throughout the school year.

From academic progress and personal development to building confidence, independence, and meaningful relationships, the students demonstrated tremendous perseverance and success in many different ways.

We were also proud to celebrate the Preschool students as they marked an important milestone and prepared to transition to the next grade level. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and growth this year have been wonderful to witness.

In addition, Beacon School honored our two graduating students for reaching this significant accomplishment. Their dedication and achievements will be highlighted individually in future posts as we celebrate their journeys and bright futures ahead. Go Rays! 🌞💙

We had a wonderful evening at our recent Family Forum!

The event began with an informative presentation from Stephanie Kendrick (SSA Director), who provided an overview of the Service and Support Administration (SSA) division, ACBDD eligibility, and available waiver services.

During the second half of the evening, guests heard from a panel that included individuals receiving SSA services, their SSAs, and a family member. Together, the panelists shared insights about their relationships, how they collaborate as a team, the importance of ensuring each individual’s voice is heard, and what person-centered support looks like in practice.

One of the guiding priorities of our Family Forums is elevating the voices and experiences of individuals who receive services. While professionals can provide information about programs and supports, there is tremendous value in hearing directly from those with lived experience. Their perspectives help foster understanding, connection, and meaningful conversations within our community.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, participated, and shared their experiences. Thank you for helping make this forum such a meaningful event. We look forward to continuing these conversations and hosting more Family Forums this fall.

Retirement celebrations are always meaningful, but we recently marked a historic occasion for the ACBDD as we celebrated the upcoming retirement of an employee who has dedicated 46 years of service to our agency.

Carol Janes-Tinkham, the ACBDD’s longtime Fiscal and Payroll Specialist, gathered with friends and colleagues in the Beacon cafeteria to celebrate her remarkable career. Throughout the event, Carol was recognized with heartfelt tributes, words of appreciation, and gifts honoring her decades of commitment and service.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions and lasting impact on the agency, the ACBDD will designate the Administrative Wing at 801 W. Union Street as “Carol’s Corner.” Supt. Kevin Davis and Board Member Barry Oches presented Carol with a plaque bearing her name during the celebration.

The space, located near Carol’s current desk, will be redesigned into a welcoming communal area where visitors may wait, staff can gather for meals or conversation, and small meetings may be held.

Designating this area as “Carol’s Corner” serves as a lasting tribute to Carol’s dedication, professionalism, and the positive influence she has had on countless colleagues, individuals, and families throughout her career.

Thank you, Carol, for 46 incredible years of service to our agency and community.

At the ACBDD, our mission is to serve our community with compassion, innovation and transparency. The SSA Department aligns with this mission daily, but staff members took an opportunity to put the mission into action in a unique way. Staff members recently partnered with Community Food Initiatives to help prepare for CFI's annual Plant Start Giveaway.

The SSAs worked in teams to prepare the plant starts, harvest food, and mulch gardens. The initiative was designed to help strengthen a local partnership with an organization that strives for an "equitable, inclusive, and thriving local food system."

We cannot thank Amy and her team enough for allowing us an opportunity to empower our own team through service to others.

We wish to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to our friends with the local Civitan group for their recent donation!

The Civitan group purchased and assembled several personal care/toiletries bags to be able to give to individuals in our community. As a group, they decided to give them to individuals served by our agency.

They shared that it is their hope that this project will help offset some expenses on items that everyone needs. "We know with the rising costs of many items, the goal in mind was to hopefully allow their budgets to go a little further on other necessary items," they shared.

Thank you, Civitan! We appreciate all that you do for our community.

Pictured here from left to right are SSAs Chase Morano and Barry Backus, along with Rachel Ulbrich, President/Treasurer of Athens Civitan Club.

In our final post that highlights the ACBDD’s Board Members, today we give a shout-out to ACBDD’s Board Member Raz Sabaiduc. These posts serve as a way of increasing community awareness and of expressing our sincere appreciation for our board members’ volunteer service.

What motivated you to join the board?
When my son was younger, our family received supportive services through the Board of DD. Even with professional experience, navigating systems as a parent can feel overwhelming. The Board of DD supported us and advocated for my son during a critical time. Serving on this board is my way of giving back and standing alongside families who need that same level of support.

What professional background or experience do you bring to this role?
I have worked in public service for 18 years, including 14 years in child protective services. I am a Certified Adoption Assessor with experience completing adoption, kinship, and court ordered home studies across Ohio. My background includes direct service with families, permanency planning, forensic interviewing, and multidisciplinary collaboration. I am currently completing my MSW. I also assisted with the most recent Board of DD levy campaign and understand the importance of strong coordination across systems to best support individuals and families.

What do you see as the biggest strength of our organization?
The greatest strength of the organization is its people. Staff meet individuals and families where they are and focus on dignity, stability, and long term support. I believe deeply in seeing each individual as a person first and in being a voice for those who may not always be heard.

Why do you believe this work matters?
This work matters because timely and compassionate support can change the course of a person’s life and strengthen entire families. Kindness, understanding, and advocacy have a real impact, and each of us has a role in creating a more supportive community.

What message would you like to share with staff?
Your work matters more than you may ever fully realize. The impact you have carries forward for years and often during the most difficult moments in a family’s life. The support the Board of DD provided to my family made a lasting impression, and your work is deeply valued.

What do you value most about the work our staff does?
I value the compassion, patience, and advocacy staff bring to each individual and family, especially during times that feel overwhelming or uncertain.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family, especially during the Christmas holidays, and staying involved in the community. I care deeply about social services and ways they can continue to improve locally. I also enjoy traveling with my family and spending time at the beach and in the mountains.

Where are you from?
I live in Athens with my wife, Thea, and our three boys. I originally moved from Romania at age 12, grew up in Cambridge, attended John Glenn High School, and later came to Ohio University. Athens has been home for many years.

What is a fun or surprising fact about you?
I previously volunteered as a firefighter and EMT, and I am bilingual.
