(1)

The Northeast Georgia Community Care Services Program (CCSP) of the Georgia Department of Community Health assists Georgians who prefer to live in the community rather than enter a long-term care facility. Some people need assistance to remain independent in their own homes, but do not need the 24 hour supervision and care provided in a nursing home. That is why CCSP was developed - to give Georgians a greater choice in deciding where to live and what assistance they need.

May 3-7 is Hurricane Preparedness Week
The best time to prepare for hurricanes is BEFORE hurricane season begins. Avoid having to rush through potentially life-saving preparations by waiting until it’s too late. Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

On My Watch Staff Spotlight
Roxana Arias, Social Worker/Case Manager

We are celebrating all of our Social Workers for National Social Workers Month! Thank you for all that you do for our clients, caregivers, and community partners!

Although only with On My Watch for one year, Roxana Arias is no stranger to the healthcare field. She began as a coordinator for a Home Health agency then moved up to District Manager. She also worked with the Now/Comp waiver program for 2 years which services people with developmental disabilities. She was team lead and program manager for another case management company but decided to land with On My Watch. And we are glad!

“I love people, and I love trying to make a difference in their lives!” I guess so, since she also volunteers her time with the Special Olympics.

Not only has she worked extensively in the healthcare industry, she served as a caregiver for her father who suffered with kidney disease for 19 years. After her father passed away, Roxana and her partner of ten years are caregivers to her aging mother who was diagnosed with dementia 5 years ago.

When she is not managing her caseload, or caring for her mother, she spends her time doing crafts, going on cruises, and visiting the casino. Her mother loves all those activities and often participates with her daughter. Roxana’s mother keeps busy as she loves tending to her roses and also helps care for their pet turtle named Tommy.

Roxana Arias was not born in the USA but moved here from Cuba 40 years ago with her parents. And she has made her home here by helping others. Understanding the joy and sorrow caregiving brings, helping her clients—giving instead of taking. But as she said, “It’s a privilege.”

And it’s a privilege to have Roxana on the On My Watch team!

On My Watch Employee Spotlight
Selena Munoz, Nurse

If you visited Selena Munoz in her home, the first thing you would notice is her jungle—a jungle of home-grown plants. She grows them, loves them, and carefully cares for them. But that is not her only love. Besides spending time with her family, you might find her out with long-time partner dancing on the weekend. What is her favorite? You name it, she loves it. Hip-hop, R and B, whatever gets her out and moving.

Another of her loves is people. “I have always been a nurturer so going to Nursing School was a way to continue to be of service to people in a meaningful way.” So in 2010 she attended a nursing program for two years and received her LPN license.

Before Selena came to On My Watch in 2019, she worked with an agency that serves quadriplegics. By her own admission, she states, “I am a people person, not a paperwork person! I guess I love nurturing and helping people.”

And that she does. Currently, as an LPN, she visits people when they first sign up with the CCSP program, and then she will do yearly follow-up visits to requalify the clients each year. One of this writer’s clients stated, “Selena is great!”

A provider said this about her, “It is with great pleasure that I am writing this letter of recognition for Ms. Selena Munoz. My first encounter with Ms. Selena Munoz was sometime shortly after 08/23/2020 over a phone conversation. Since then, Ms. Munoz left an ever-lasting impression on my mind. I found her to be a very kindhearted person and has great empathy for humans and of course for her clients.”

And that is just the kind of people who work at On My Watch. Kind. Caring for people and helping them grow and nurturing them, just like she does her plants.

Don't Panic. Just Prepare.

We're a few days out from seeing winter weather in a large portion of North and Central Georgia. While it's too early to determine expected impacts in specific locations, the potential exists for significant travel issues, widespread power outages from downed trees and powerlines, and burst pipes this weekend into early next week.

Here's what you can be doing:
🫂Prepare your family. Make a family communications plan, have enough non-perishable food, water and medications for at least 3 days, ensure you have warm clothing and blankets, update your first aid kit, and keep your phone charged.

🏠Prepare your home. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, cover outdoor pipes and seal doors/windows, clean out gutters, ensure safe use of portable heaters and generators, gather supplies like flashlights, batteries, candles, and extra blankets.

🚗Prepare your car. Make sure your gas tank is full and prepare an emergency car kit including a first aid kit, cell phone charger, jumper cables, blankets, water, snacks and an ice scraper.

For ongoing updates, follow GEMA/HS, the National Weather Service, your local emergency management agency and trusted media outlets. For more preparedness tips, visit https://gema.georgia.gov/winter.
