🚧Athens Regional Park to Temporarily Close for Paving🚧

The City of Athens advises residents and visitors that Athens Regional Park is scheduled to close temporarily to the public while paving improvements are completed.

Paving work is currently scheduled for Tuesday, September 8th, and Wednesday, September 9th. Athens Regional Park will be closed to the public during paving operations to allow crews to safely and efficiently complete the work.

The paving schedule is weather-dependent and may be adjusted if conditions prevent work from taking place as planned.

Any changes to the closure dates, as well as updates regarding the reopening of the park, will be communicated through the City of Athens, Tennessee’s official social media pages and website.

The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while these improvements are completed and encourages park visitors to plan accordingly.

🎃PUMPKINTOWN 2026🎃

The Pumpkintown Festival with Friendly City Festivals returns October 10th from 10 AM to 5 PM in Downtown Athens!

There will be entertainment stages, more than 300 vendors, Activities on every block, and much much more!

Since its founding in 2003, Pumpkintown has grown into a vibrant living history festival celebrating the region’s rich Native American and Colonial heritage. Each year, the festival welcomes approximately 25,000 visitors to downtown Athens and features more than 300 arts, crafts, food, and local business vendors. A highlight of the annual celebration is the Native American PowWow, which showcases traditional culture, music, dance, and heritage.

This morning, students from Athens City Schools and McMinn County Schools, Tennessee gathered at Tennessee Wesleyan University to learn more about one of the most significant events in our community’s history, the Battle of Athens.

As Athens commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Athens, students had the opportunity to learn about the events of August 1, 1946, when local citizens stood for change, as well as the lasting reforms that followed.

The commemoration continues this evening with a special presentation by TWU alumnus and author Dr. C. Stephen Byrum.

Dr. Byrum will explore the history of the Battle of Athens, the citizens involved, and its lasting impact on Athens and McMinn County.

Tonight's event begins at 6:00 p.m. at Tennessee Wesleyan University's Townsend Auditorium

The public is invited to attend as our community comes together to remember an important chapter in Athens history and ensure its story continues to be shared with future generations.
