No application is required to visit our facility walk-ins are always welcome.
• Rescue tags are accepted once animals are posted and if no adoption applications are in.
• All stray animals are held for a 72-hour stray hold.
• Submitting an application in advance places you in our system, but it is not required. If you do apply, please include the animal’s ID number or name.

🐱 Kittens: $100 each OR 2 for $150
🐈 Adult Cats: $80 each OR 2 for $120

Your adoption fee includes:

✨ Spayed/Neutered
✨ Microchipped
✨ FVRCP vaccines
✨ Rabies vaccine, if age appropriate
✨ Deworming
✨ Bravecto for flea & tick prevention
✨ Any additional care they may need while in our shelter

🎉 HANK HAS BEEN TAGGED BY RESCUE 🎉

💔 A Special Last Day for Hank 💔

Today we received news we never wanted to hear about Hank.

Hank was seen by the veterinarian today for the area around his eye, and unfortunately, we learned that he has cancer. After discussing his condition and quality of life with the veterinarian, we were told that the kindest thing we can do for Hank is to let him go peacefully.

Before that happens, though, we want Hank to have one AMAZING last day. 🐾💙

We are looking for someone who would be willing to take Hank out and absolutely spoil him. Let him feel the sunshine, go for a ride, eat a cheeseburger or 3, have all the treats his heart desires, sniff all the good smells, and simply enjoy being a dog outside of the shelter.

We do want to be very clear that this is not something we can wait several days to do. His cancer is seems to be aggressive. It has grew with in a day and we will not allow him to suffer just so we can have more time with him. His comfort and quality of life have to come first. We are hoping someone can step up right away to give this sweet man the special day he deserves before he returns to us so we can be with him as he peacefully crosses the rainbow bridge. 💙

If anyone would like to help with the cost of the care that was provided for him, donations can be made directly toward Hank’s veterinary expenses by calling. Veterinary Medical Center of Athens Any amount would be incredibly appreciated. In times like this.

This is one of the hardest parts of sheltering. Sometimes loving them means fighting for them, and sometimes loving them means knowing when it is time to let them go.

Hank may not have gotten the ending we desperately wanted for him, but we can still give him a beautiful one.

🩷POLKA IS GOING HOME!!! 🩷

Polka is one of our longest stays. For 67 days, she waited. She watched people come and go. She watched other dogs leave with their families. And every single day, we kept telling her, “Your person is coming, sweet girl.”

Today, they finally did. 🥹

Her new family actually called specifically asking about Polka because she reminded them of a beloved dog they had before. They came to the shelter just to meet her, and from the second they met, it felt like it was meant to be.

Polka walked right up to the young man with absolutely no fear. She was gentle, sweet, and completely herself just kisses, wiggles, and love.

For those who have followed Polka’s story, you know just how special today is. This is the girl who was dumped at our back gate, terrified and alone. She hid in the woods for days before we were finally able to earn her trust and bring her to safety.

And now look at her.

There wasn’t a dry eye among our staff. We have loved this girl for 67 days, and saying goodbye is bittersweet but THIS is the goodbye we live for.

Polka, you waited so patiently. You never gave up on people, even when people had failed you before.

Your wait is over, sweet girl. You’re finally HOME🐾🩷

Happy adoption day, Polka. We love you more than you’ll ever know. Now go live the beautiful life you’ve been waiting for. 🥹🩷

Sweet Hank has a vet appointment today at 4:30 PM, and we are looking for someone willing to volunteer to take him! 🐾💙

Hank is a gentle older gentleman who needs to be seen by the vet. His appointment is within the Athens city limits, and you will be in direct contact with the shelter manager throughout the process.

We want to be upfront that we are unsure how long the appointment may take it could be around an hour, or possibly closer to two.

If you have some free time this afternoon and would be willing to step up for Hank, we would be incredibly grateful! Even something as simple as taking him to the vet can make a huge difference.💙

Are you struggling right now and live in Henderson County? Athens Animal Services would like to help!

On Thursday, August 27th, from 11:00 AM–4:00 PM, we will be providing dog food assistance to Henderson County residents who need a little extra help caring for their pets.

📋 A Pet Food Assistance Form must be completed in order to receive assistance.

🐶 Dog food will be available while supplies last.

We are happy to announce that Athens Animal Services is returning to our normal operating hours!
