The Trinity-Neches SWCD #422, established in 1940, has earned the distinction of Outstanding SWCD of the Year for its exceptional commitment to conservation, producer services, and education across more than 1 million acres in East Texas. At Henderson County Farm & Ranch Tour this week, Trinity-Neches SWCD presented Dr. Christopher Johnson with our Conservationist of the Year award! This award recognizes a producer who shows outstanding achievement in natural resources management.

Dr. Johnson manages J1 Ranch in Henderson County, a cow/calf and stocker cattle operation started by his parents, Ben & Patsy Johnson, along with his grandfather, W.M. Johnson. He adheres to regenerative ranching practices focused on promoting soil health. In his words, "Healthy life beneath the surface creates healthy life above the surface." His efforts have resulted in increased soil pH, organic matter, fungi, and earthworm populations. Water infiltration rates have also improved significantly.

We are thrilled to honor Dr. Johnson for his innovative strategies and commitment to wise land stewardship!

As Texas Soil & Water Stewardship Week comes to a close, we’re reminded of an important truth: Soil is where it all begins. 🌱

Healthy soil supports our native habitats, sustains agriculture, protects water resources, and strengthens the landscapes we depend on every day. When we invest in soil conservation, we’re investing in a healthier, more resilient Texas for generations to come. Thank you for joining us in celebrating !
