The 2026 Friendly City Co-Ed Softball season came to a close at Athens Regional Park Thursday night as three champions were crowned in the Competitive, Intermediate, and Recreation divisions!

Freedom Reigns capped off their perfect 11-0 season by defeating E&E Manufacturing 12-6 in the Competitive championship game. They also defeated Superior Sanitation and H20 along the way as the #1 seed in tournament play.

In the Intermediate division, Daddy Ballers completed a storybook ending by winning the championship as the #4 seed with a 15-3 victory over 2-seeded Knuckleheads. DB also knocked out the #1 seed Hiwassee Lumberjacks on Tuesday to advance to the title game.

The ultimate Cinderella run came from Sweetwater First Assembly as both teams, SFA 1 & 2, made it to the championship game in improbable fashion. It was the 8-seeded Sweetwater First 2 team who came out on top with a 14-13 win in extra innings. Their wins over Starr Regional Medical Center and Pool Warehouse helped make them the highest seed to win a championship in league history!

We want to thank our record 29 co-ed teams for joining us this season and making this summer one we'll never forget!

LABOR DAY HOLIDAY CLOSING!

The City of Athens Public Works Department announces the following closures in observance of Labor Day.

The Athens Municipal Building, Public Works, Recycle Center, Pakrs & Rec Offices, and Animal Shelter will be closed Monday, September 7, 2026, and will reopen during regular business hours on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Garbage Collection:
Residential garbage normally collected on Monday, September 7, will be picked up on Tuesday, September 8. All other residential garbage routes during the week of Labor Day will remain on their regular schedule.

Residents are asked to have garbage totes at the road the night before their scheduled pickup. Commercial and industrial garbage routes will be collected on a limited basis.

All emergency services will continue to operate on a 24-hour basis. In the event of an emergency, contact McMinn E911 Communications.
