What about the turtles?🐢

We’ve gotten that question a lot since construction at Athens Memorial Park began. Rest assured, our shelled friends are in turtley good, albeit muddy, hands! Nature Division Administrator Jace Besold is sticking his neck out to ensure every turtle makes a safe and smooth transition into the undisturbed lake while we work on improving the park. 👏

We are dedicated to providing safe shell-ter for all the wildlife in our parks!

Hey Athens! ☀️ We’ve got some fantastic news for your next walk, run, or bike ride: a brand new section of the Firefly Trail is officially OPEN! 🎉

We’ve just added 2.5 miles of fresh pavement for all to enjoy. This new stretch picks up right at the intersection of Hancock Rd and Spring Valley Rd and takes you just past Taylor and Lane.

While it currently comes to a dead end, don't worry, it won't be that way forever! This new piece is a huge step toward our exciting goal of connecting straight into the Winterville section.

In case you didn't know, the Firefly Trail is a planned 39-mile rail-trail that will eventually stretch all the way from Athens to Union Point, tracing the historic Athens Branch of the Georgia Railroad. We are so proud that Athens-Clarke County already hosts nearly 7 miles of this beautiful path! 🌳

Grab your sneakers, load up the bikes, or leash up your pup, and come check out the newest addition to our amazing local trail family. See you out there!

Our parks are full of hidden history, and as we wrap up National Park & Recreation Month, we're celebrating a major milestone for a local favorite. The "Pink Building" at Athens Memorial Park was officially designated as a local Historic Landmark this year! 🏛️🌸

Originally built as the Fairhaven Tuberculosis Sanitarium, the facility was approved by Athens voters in 1924 to combat an epidemic, providing 30 beds on Gran Ellen Drive. You can still see the building's deep history right at the front door, where the entrance prominently features double-barred crosses—the international symbol for the fight against tuberculosis.

This new landmark designation honors a powerful chapter in our community's story. We love that our parks are places where history and outdoor recreation meet! 🙌🌿
