This morning ACCFD members assigned to Ladder 1, T-Rex, repaired the flag pole halyard at Athens-Clarke County, GA Unified Government City Hall after it had become damaged.

We care about our community and are always ready to lend a helping hand! We’ll be back to install the new halyard, US Flag and State of Georgia flag in the coming days.

We want to thank the Classic City Kiwanis Club for hosting Fire Chief Nate Moss at their weekly breakfast meeting last week. There was a great discussion of fire and life safety in our community. These great folks invest a lot into our community, and we are thankful for all they do to make Athens a better place to live and work.

In fact, one of their fundraising events is coming up. If you would like to sign up for their 3rd Annual 5K, follow the QR code on the pictured flyer.

🎓🚑 Congratulations to Lila Sloan – the First Graduate of the Public Safety Academy! 🚑🎓

The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department is proud to recognize Lila Sloan, the first graduate of the Athens Community Career Academy’s (ACCA) Public Safety Academy pathway.

While still in high school, Lila earned her Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification to begin her EMS career ahead of schedule. This fall, she will attend Georgia State University to complete a Paramedic Bridge Program while working part-time with Jackson County EMS. After turning 21, she plans to join Grady EMS before ultimately pursuing her goal of serving with Washington, D.C. Fire and EMS, where she has family ties.

Lila’s accomplishments demonstrate what is possible when motivated students are provided with meaningful opportunities, dedicated instructors, and strong community partnerships.

The ACCA provides students with access to smaller learning communities that connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. Through partnerships with local businesses, public safety agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations, students gain hands-on experience while preparing for both college and career success.

The Public Safety Academy, housed within the Business & Public Safety Academy, is helping develop the next generation of firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical providers, and public servants.

Congratulations, Lila! We are excited to see where your journey takes you and proud to have been a small part of your success story. Pictured is Lt. Michael Roberts, (ACCA Instructor) and Lila holding a gift from IAAF Local 2795 a tee shirt to remember her time in Athens and her first Fire Department patch from ACCFD.

How should lithium-ion batteries be disposed of?

Lithium-ion batteries and the devices that contain them should not go in household garbage or recycling bins. They can cause fires during transport or at landfills and recyclers. Instead, lithium-ion batteries should be taken to separate recycling or household hazardous waste collection points. Many stores that sell large quantities of lithium-ion batteries have a recycling program where you can return used batteries.

Here in Athens-Clarke County, we have several options for safe disposal of batteries. See your options as you read about a recent incident involving an Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department truck.

At around 1:30 today Engine 26 and Tanker 1 responded to calls for grass fires in the area of Voyles Rd railroad crossing. It appears a passing train threw sparks and set several different spot fires down the tracks.

Pictured here is Tanker 1, as a CSX Train moves along the tracks in the distance.

This is a good reminder that Athens is currently in moderate to severe outdoor fire danger due to drought conditions.

Last week, members of the Fire Marshal’s Office attended the annual Georgia Public Safety Fire Investigators Association (GPSFIA) Conference in Helen, Georgia.

The week provided outstanding opportunities for training, collaboration, networking, and professional development alongside some of the best fire investigators in the state.

Among the highlights were presentations from the UGA Bomb Squad and Jose Ramirez on Gang Awareness, both of which offered valuable insight and real-world application for today’s public safety professionals.

Continuing education and specialized training like this strengthen our ability to serve our Department and protect the Athens community through professional fire investigations and public safety partnerships.
