ATHENS HABITAT TURNED 38 and volunteers from Rotary Club of Athens, GA, USA and Classic City of Athens Rotary Club came out to help us celebrate by doing what we do, building houses! Thanks to Rashe's Cuisine for putting out a lunch spread, and to everyone who pitched in for a day of work and fellowship!

A DIFFERENT KIND OF WALL RAISING: Working with BuildBlock Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) is a whole different ballgame from "stick" framing! Starting with lightweight rigid insulation makes the framing process so much easier and safer, although it does require precision. The 6" concrete layer can then be filled in by a mobile pump. It's a different world with these ICFs! Huge thanks to our volunteers from Publix who came out to assist on a hot summer day!

FIFTEEN TWO-BEDROOM BUNGALOWS will comprise "Lydia's Second Home," which will provide housing for formerly homeless students accepted to local colleges and tech schools, subsidized by Lydia's Place. These houses, constructed with ICFs (insulating concrete forms), will co-exist with single-family homes and tiny houses on the Micah's Creek main lot in Athens, GA, to create a culturally blended community.

THIS AIN'T YOUR GRAMPA'S CORNERSTONE! Our first homes on the Micah's creek main lot begin with the insulation. Insulating concrete forms (ICFs) by BuildBlock interlock to create a rigid structure for a thin but strong layer of reinforced concrete. Drywall is then hung on the interior, and any type of siding can be attached to the exterior.

These ICF homes are up to 60% more energy efficient than stick-framed houses, require smaller HVAC systems, and give homeowners lower utility bills and insurance premiums, as the resulting structures resist fire, storms, and termites. And they are wonderfully quiet! This build day was also a training day, teaching builders how to use these innovative materials in their own work.

THE INSULATING BLOCKS for our first Micah's Creek houses are on-site. This installation will also serve as a training session for area builders. And the driver was one of our Habitat homeowners, Miss Jalisa!
