The Future Starts Now: Class of 2030 Begins Early College Fast Track Experience
The Early College Fast Track Program was designed with a strong focus on college and career readiness, covering topics such as communication, leadership, STEM, English, Math, and critical thinking. The goal is simple: to help students start strong and hit the ground running when they enter Athol High School as the Class of 2030 in August 2026 and begin their journey as members of the AHS Early College Academy.
Tuesday, May 19th marked Day 1 of the Early College Fast Track Program — and our students absolutely hit the ground running! All 31 eighth grade students enrolled in the program were ready to board the bus at ARMS when it arrived at 7:40 AM, bringing excitement, energy, and enthusiasm with them.
The morning began with Principal Dave King welcoming students to Athol High School and sharing a personal story about the path that led him to where he is today. His message about the importance of showing up, working hard, and taking advantage of opportunities set the tone for the day.
Students then participated in interactive activities led by Mr. Shamgochian, AHS College and Career Readiness Coordinator, and Erika Puccio, Academic Counselor from MWCC. After learning more about one another, students broke into groups to complete an “Adventure Toolbox” activity focused on identifying the tools and skills students need to have a successful day — both academically and personally.
Students then spent the next two hours working with Brian Army, Adjunct Mathematics Professor at Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State University. During the session, students explored graphing linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations using multiple methods, and participated in collaborative station activities. They also worked on introductory concepts in linear programming, including maximizing profit and minimizing cost through real-world problem-solving applications.
This is just the beginning for an impressive group of future AHS students, and we are excited to see all they accomplish over the next several weeks.
Students returned to ARMS at 11:00 AM already excited to join us again on Tuesday, May 26 for Session 2 of the Early College Fast Track Program!
