Our History

There was a time when families with children considered “different” had few options for how to raise them. Society’s dictate was a big brick building—an institution where children and adults with disabilities would live out their lives—isolated from family and community. It not only separated them. It denied the rest of us the richness of growing up in a world that celebrated our diff

erences along with our commonality. Then the turbulent era of the 1960s and 70s arrived with its promise of civil rights for all citizens—black, white, with disabilities, young, old—all citizens. That promise imbedded itself into the American conscience. Parents had a new awareness of possibilities—dreams of integration for their children—living at home with family, being part of neighborhood schools, attending church, going to summer camp with friends and growing up to work at gainful employment. A simple dream for a valued life. A group of those courageous New Hampshire parents fought for their children—and in 1979 Region 10 Community Support Services was established. Our name has changed to Community Crossroads—the essence of our mission remains the same. We work to support the integrity of the family and full integration in our southern NH communities. Community Crossroads is a nonprofit agency guided by families and governed by a volunteer board of parents, local citizens, and community members. We provide Guidance, Support and Advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities, adults with acquired brain disorders, individuals in need of long-term supports due to age or disability—as well as their families and caregivers. Community Crossroads believes everyone deserves~

We are honored to share the newest addition to our community of communication boards, now located at the Tuscan Village Playground in Salem, NH.

This board holds an especially meaningful place in our hearts, as it was dedicated in memory of Joe Hatch. The Family Support Council chose to honor his memory by creating an opportunity for connection and inclusion within the community.

Communication boards give children and families another way to communicate, express themselves, play, and connect with one another—helping make our community more welcoming and accessible to everyone.

We are deeply grateful to Joe’s family for allowing the Community Crossroads Family Support Council to be part of this special tribute. What a beautiful way to keep Joe’s memory present in a place where children and families gather, play, and make memories of their own. ❤️

A special thank you to Tuscan Village for helping make this meaningful addition to the playground possible.

We hope this board will be used, enjoyed, and shared by many families for years to come. 💙

Thank you to the Sandown Recreation Department for continuing to support communication for all!! We are glad to have been able to collaborate to promote everyone’s ability to communicate, connect and play together! Sandown friends and families, you can find this board at the Ed Garvey Rec. Center!

One of our firm beliefs here at Sandown Recreation is that recreation is for everyone.

Whether you are a child, an adult, a senior, or someone who communicates in a different way, it doesn't matter to us. Our doors are open, and we want everyone in our community to feel welcomed, included, and like they have a place here.

We want to give a huge and heartfelt thank you to Community Cross Roads for their incredibly generous donation of a beautiful communication board for our playground.

This board is so much more than an addition to our playground. It helps children communicate, connect, and play together, and it helps make sure that more members of our community can enjoy our recreation spaces.

We are so grateful to Community Cross Roads for helping us make our playground and our community a more welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.

Recreation is for every single person.

On behalf of the Sandown Recreation Commission, thank you, Community Cross Roads, for helping us build a community where everyone belongs.

We are excited to announce Plaistow’s new Communication Board that has been installed at Ingals Park! Thank you to the Community Crossroads Family Support Council for their dedication and commitment to helping our communities to be accessible for everyone!

💫💙 Recreation is for everyone 💙💫

This week, Plaistow Recreation was excited to partner with Community Crossroads to install a communication board at Smith Field! 🛝⚽️

A communication board is an accessible tool that gives children another way to communicate, especially children who are nonverbal or have difficulty communicating through speech. It uses pictures, symbols, and words to help children express their wants, needs, feelings, and ideas.
Communication boards can also help children join in games, make choices, interact with other children, build social connections, and feel more included during play. Most importantly, they give children a voice and help create an environment where everyone can participate and be part of the fun. 💙
We are so happy to have this wonderful addition at Smith Field and proud to continue making our parks and recreation opportunities more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

A huge thank you to Community Crossroads for partnering with us and helping us continue our mission that recreation is for everyone! 🌟
