Another huge outpouring of mutual aid and community support yesterday, July 25th, to help knock down a widespread hayfield fire southeast of Atkinson. Extreme dry conditions, the vast amount of hay down, and a south wind contributed to a rapid growth in size of this fire. Mutual aid was called for O’Neill Fire and Stuart Fire and we thank them wholeheartedly for answering the call providing immediate support. Community ranchers, Atkinson Fertilizer and Ag Services brought additional water trucks that were instrumental. Osborne Construction peeled apart bales and torn down burning trees. Once again without mutual aid, the community members, and community businesses the outcome of this would have been much more devastating.

High temperatures and the weather may have been a challenge, but not even a heat index of 110 can slow us down!

On Thursday June 25th Atkinson Fire & Rescue held their monthly drill at Sandhills Renewable. Fire and Rescue both trained and simulated a femur fracture on one of the levels of the dry distiller grain leg. Firefighters & EMS used ropes and techniques learned from their class they attended at Nebraska State Fire School.

The Atkinson Fire and Rescue Department would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Atkinson-ettes for organizing and hosting a Mystery Dinner Party and auction fundraiser in support of our department this past month.

Not only was the event a success, but it was also a fun and memorable evening for our department and everyone who attended. The laughter, community spirit, and support shown throughout the night made it an event we will not soon forget.

Because of your generosity and the incredible support from our community, funds were raised for the purchase of a thermal drone that will greatly enhance our capabilities during emergency response situations.

The drone has already proven to be an invaluable tool during the recent widespread fire in our area, allowing crews to safely monitor fire progression and capture detailed aerial images of the scene. The level of precision and situational awareness this technology provides from the air is remarkable, as many of you have seen through the photos shared from the fire.

In addition to fire response, the thermal capabilities of the drone will play a critical role in future search and rescue operations, helping locate individuals more quickly and safely, especially in low-visibility or nighttime conditions.

We are incredibly grateful to the Atkinsonettes and to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, and supported this effort. Investments like this directly strengthen our ability to protect and serve our communities. Thank you for standing behind your local fire and rescue department.

After a very long 48 hours of fighting this fire, Atkinson Fire and Rescue can report it is 80% contained. Many remained on scene today, mopping up hot spots, monitoring burning bale piles, and working shelter belts.

We are extremely grateful for the rapid response and mutual aid provided by surrounding departments last night, which made containment of the fire possible.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Atkinson Police Department, O’Neill Police Department, and the Holt County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with evacuation efforts of the town of Atkinson while our crews were fully engaged on the fire.

A special thank you to our local farmers and ranchers who showed up without hesitation bringing equipment and manpower. Your willingness to step in and support these efforts played a vital role in protecting property and helping bring this fire under control.

The outpouring of support for both our community and our fire and rescue department has been truly incredible. Thank you to everyone who provided water, food, snacks, donations, uplifting words and prayers. We are reminded of the strength, resilience, and unity that define our community and the communities around us that we are proud to serve.

On February 28th the Atkinson Rural Board hosted their annual appreciation supper and awards banquet at the Atkinson firehall. Many current and retired members were present. Parker Theisen, Casey Schaaf and Angie Schaaf were honored for 10 years of service. Randy Bilstein, Scott Keogh, and Curtis Gotschall were honored for 20 years of service. Retired members Kelly Jelinek, Tyler Mitchell, and Rhonda Ketteler received honorary status for having served 10 years or more. Jeremy Troidl won 2025 firefighter of the year and Weston Mathis won 2025 EMT of the year. Congratulations to all.
