After a very long 48 hours of fighting this fire, Atkinson Fire and Rescue can report it is 80% contained. Many remained on scene today, mopping up hot spots, monitoring burning bale piles, and working shelter belts.
We are extremely grateful for the rapid response and mutual aid provided by surrounding departments last night, which made containment of the fire possible.
We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Atkinson Police Department, O’Neill Police Department, and the Holt County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with evacuation efforts of the town of Atkinson while our crews were fully engaged on the fire.
A special thank you to our local farmers and ranchers who showed up without hesitation bringing equipment and manpower. Your willingness to step in and support these efforts played a vital role in protecting property and helping bring this fire under control.
The outpouring of support for both our community and our fire and rescue department has been truly incredible. Thank you to everyone who provided water, food, snacks, donations, uplifting words and prayers. We are reminded of the strength, resilience, and unity that define our community and the communities around us that we are proud to serve.
