SUBJECT: UPDATE – OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

The Atlanta Police Department is providing an update regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 29, 2026, at approximately 1:34 pm in the 900 Block Loop 59.

The suspect involved in the incident remains hospitalized and is currently listed in stable/serious condition. No additional information regarding the suspect's medical treatment will be released at this time.

The officers involved were not injured. As is standard procedure, the involved officer(s) have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Texas Rangers, along with Atlanta Police Criminal Investigations Division, continue to investigate the incident. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

At this stage of the investigation, no further details will be released to protect the integrity of the investigative process. Additional information will be provided when it becomes available and appropriate for public release.

Officer Involved Shooting

On May 29, 2026, at approximately 1:34 pm, officers with the Atlanta Police Department and Queen City Police Department responded to Loop 59 regarding an individual pointing a firearm at vehicles.

During the encounter, circumstances arose that resulted in an officer discharging their department-issued firearm. The suspect was struck and Officer’s on scene provided immediate medical attention to the suspect. He was transported to Saint Michael Hospital to receive a higher level of medical care.
No officers were injured during the incident. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

The Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for the investigation. This is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings and is intended to ensure a thorough and impartial review of the incident.

Currently, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the investigation.

On Friday May 22,2026, an abandoned firearm was recovered at 803 Loop-59 (Atlanta Café Diner). The firearm is stored at the Atlanta Police Department. Contact Captain Jimma Hicks at 310 N Louise St, Atlanta, TX 75551. Phone: (903) 796 7973 to recover the firearm. If the owner does not claim the firearm within 90 days of this posted notice, the abandoned firearm will be disposed of, and the proceeds, after deducting reasonable expense of keeping the property and cost of disposition, will be deposited in the treasury of the City of Atlanta Texas.

Retirement Announcement — Sergeant Ernie Cutchall

The Atlanta Police Department announces the retirement of Sergeant Ernie Cutchall after 24 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Atlanta.

Sergeant Cutchall began his law enforcement career with the Atlanta Police Department in 2000, serving numerous assignments throughout his career including patrol, investigations, training, and supervision.

Through professionalism, leadership, and commitment to public safety, Sergeant Cutchall earned the respect of fellow officers, community members, and partner agencies.

During Sergeant Cutchall's tenure with the Atlanta Police Department he answered over 10,000 calls for service, issued over 7,000 traffic citations, and has made 1,647 arrests.

Chief Greg Restelle stated:

"Sergeant Cutchall has served this department and community with honor, integrity, and dedication. His leadership and mentorship have positively impacted countless officers and citizens. We are grateful for his years of service and wish him and his family the very best in retirement.

Sergeant Cutchall's final day of service will be May 20, 2026.
