This Week signed an Executive Order to address calls for Police Reform. Here is a breakdown of exactly what is in the order.
To be clear, While Biden cannot directly issue mandates to state and local law enforcement agencies, senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the action Tuesday said attorneys general should use their power to award grants that promote and support agencies in getting accredited or those that want to adopt such policies but could use some federal help.
The order creates a national registry of officers fired for misconduct and encourages state and local police to tighten restrictions on chokeholds and so-called no-knock warrants. It also restricts the transfer of military equipment to law enforcement agencies and mandates all federal agents wear activated body cameras.
Under the new executive order, law enforcement will be required to intervene and stop the use of excessive force when they see it and administer medical aid to those who are injured.
The database of disciplinary records will apply to federal officers and state and local jurisdictions that partner with the federal government on joint task forces. It will cover more than 100,000 officers in total, senior administration officials said.
A senior administration official said the White House used the House-passed legislation as a basis for developing the executive order, going farther than the bill in some areas and scaling back others. Biden will continue to push for the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, the official said.
While we know this is nowhere near enough, we have to commit ourselves to fighting for Justice and Equity on the local, state, and federal level.
We have some exciting news coming soon… stay tuned.
