Councilmember Jason Winston Atlanta City Council, District 1

05/08/2026

The FY27 City budget hearings have begun! It's a tremendous honor to be the Council's Finance Committee Chair, and I'm committed to ensuring the budget process remains transparent, accessible, and focused on the needs of Atlantans. I'm bringing more than just my experience in finance to the committee -- I'm also showing up as a neighbor, husband, and father in the community. As your representatives, we must be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars to strengthen neighborhoods, improve infrastructure, and keep families safe.

Hearings are taking place at City Hall through May 21.

I'm proud to announce that South-View Cemetery is now listed on the Georgia Register of Historic Places. Located in our very own Lakewood neighborhood, South-View has always been sacred ground where so much of Atlanta’s story is written - from the civil rights era to the Atlanta we know today. Alongside Mayor Andre Dickens and the full Council, I secured funds to move this process forward. It is the resting place of several prominent Atlantans like Congressman John Lewis, John Wesley Dobbs, Alonzo Herndon, and Rep. David Scott. I am grateful to the South-View Cemetery Association and the Atlanta Preservation Center for treating this work with the urgency and respect it deserves.

I joined my colleagues on a tour of the ongoing projects at Hartsfield-Jackson’s Concourse D. These projects will expand the concourse, create larger waiting areas, and improve passenger flow - allowing Atlantans to have a smoother travel experience. Looking forward to seeing the completed project!

I’m deeply saddened by the shooting at Little Bear Food Mart in Lakewood Heights, where an innocent bystander lost their life and two others were injured. It’s a heartbreaking situation, and I’m keeping the victims and their families in my thoughts. I remain in close contact with APD and will stay engaged as they work to find answers and keep our community safe.

This location has seen repeated violence, and it calls for continued, intentional collaboration to strengthen safety in that area.

I joined the panel “From ’96 to ’26: The Legacy of Mega-Events in Atlanta” to talk how we’re preparing for the World Cup and beyond. These moments must be measured by lasting benefits - stronger infrastructure, economic opportunity, and real gains for Atlanta neighborhoods and local businesses.

Honored to join colleagues and ATL residents for Mayor Dickens’ 2026 State of the City. He highlighted the work to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We can strengthen our neighborhoods while ensuring nobody is left behind.

⭐️March’s District 1 Highlight: JD Summerhill Variety Deli (559 Martin St). Neighborhood spots like this are what make District 1 special - great food and everyday convenience in one place. If you haven’t been, stop by and try it. Their jerk chicken is some of the best in the city.

Yesterday’s Beltline Southeast Trail ribbon cutting was a big win for our southside neighborhoods - and a reminder of what’s possible when we invest in connection. This trail will make it easier and safer for families to walk, bike, and reach parks, schools, and local businesses.

For me, it’s personal. Shalya and I bought our first home in Boulevard Heights at 28, with help from the Atlanta Development Authority. Back then, the space behind our home was an active rail spur - and it wasn’t something families gathered around. Now, we’re raising our two daughters in the same neighborhood - and they’ll grow up with spaces like this.

The Beltline is about transformation and opportunity. As we celebrate, we also have to keep pushing for what comes next: affordable housing and economic opportunity so longtime residents can stay and benefit.

Thank you to Atlanta Beltline, the project team, neighborhood leaders, and every resident who kept showing up to make this real.
