DA Fani Willis and the entire FCDAO extend our heartfelt condolences to the Turner family, loved ones, friends, and all who were impacted by Ted Turner’s remarkable life and legacy. We join the Atlanta community, the State of Georgia, and people around the world in mourning the passing of a media pioneer, philanthropist, environmental advocate, and visionary leader.

While not born in Atlanta, Ted Turner became one of our city’s most influential adopted sons after making Atlanta his home in the 1960s. His bold vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering belief in this city helped transform Atlanta into a global center for media, business, sports, and innovation.

As the founder of CNN and Turner Broadcasting, Mr. Turner revolutionized journalism by creating the world’s first 24-hour news network, forever changing how people across the globe receive information and understand world events. From Atlanta, he built a media empire that created thousands of jobs, elevated the city’s international profile, and helped position Fulton County as a hub for opportunity, creativity, and economic growth.
Mr. Turner also left an indelible mark on Atlanta’s sports and cultural identity through his longtime ownership of the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, and Atlanta Trashers. Under his leadership, the Braves became “America’s Team,” bringing national attention to Atlanta and generations of pride to baseball fans across Georgia and the South. His investments in Atlanta sports and entertainment further established Atlanta as a major force on the national stage and helped expand professional sports opportunities for generations of Atlantans.

Beyond his business accomplishments, Ted Turner will be remembered for his extraordinary philanthropy and his deep commitment to making the world better for future generations. His support of the United Nations, environmental conservation efforts, advocacy for wildlife preservation, and commitment to sustainability reflected a lifelong dedication to service beyond self. Through organizations and initiatives like the Turner Foundation and Captain Planet, he inspired generations to care for our planet and one another.

Ted Turner helped shape the modern Atlanta we know today, and his impact on Fulton County, the State of Georgia, our nation, and the world will never be forgotten.

"I’m grateful to the jurors for returning a guilty verdict in a complicated case," said Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. "This tragedy is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences that can occur when someone in the midst of a serious mental health crisis has ready access to a firearm, and why commonsense safeguards matter. I pray for the loved ones of Michael Shinners and Wesley Freeman, and hope this verdict provides some measure of justice."
