Today, May 31, is National Dam Safety Awareness Day.

Across the Southeast, USACE South Atlantic Division dams play a vital role in reducing flood risk, managing water resources, supporting navigation, generating hydropower and providing recreation opportunities for surrounding communities. National Dam Safety Awareness Day serves as an important reminder that while dams provide significant benefits, all infrastructure carries risk. Staying informed and practicing water safety near dams is crucial, especially in areas closest to spillways and structures where currents can be extremely dangerous.

USACE South Atlantic Division remains committed to maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure and supporting flood resilient communities across the region.

Today, the South Atlantic Division celebrated a significant milestone as our Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General was promoted to the rank of Captain during a ceremony held at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.

Promotion to Captain reflects demonstrated leadership, dedication and commitment to service, qualities exemplified daily through her support to the Division and Brig. Gen. Zachary Miller.

We congratulate Capt. Boushelle on this well-earned achievement, and look forward to her continued success as she serves the Nation and the Army.

May 31 is National Dam Safety Awareness Day.

Dam safety programs, like the one from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, help federal, state, and local stakeholders responsible for dams monitor them and follow best safety practices.

USACE is responsible for over 750 dams nationwide, contributing to the reduction of flood risk for 15 million people and $950B in property.

Preparedness starts with partnership.

This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Atlantic Division hosted a Hurricane Tabletop Exercise focused on strengthening and synchronizing response capabilities alongside our federal, state, and regional partners ahead of hurricane season.
The exercise brought together partners from FEMA Region 2 and Region 4, the Environmental Protection Agency, National Park Service, Navy SUPSALV, Civil Air Patrol and others to discuss response operations and improve interagency collaboration.

Exercises like these are critical to ensuring our teams are aligned, communication channels are established, and response efforts can be executed quickly and effectively when communities need support most.
