The Georgia Department of Public Safety was created in 1937 and oversees the day-to-day operation of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts, and enforce traffic regulations throughout C

apitol Hill. CVE officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials. Some things are bigger than the badge. Before he was Colonel Billy Hitchens, he was simply a son watching his dad, former Colonel Bill Hitchens, serve the State of Georgia.

Today, that family connection has come full circle. Two generations. Two Colonels. One shared commitment to serving Georgia. Behind the uniforms and titles is a father and son who share a profession, a legacy and a bond that goes far beyond the badge.

-Violation of the week-
A CMV carrying a cargo tank loaded with asphalt was selected for inspection, after noticing an abnormally strong smell of asphalt, CVE officers noticed hazardous material on the exterior of the tank, which is a violation. Once they began the inspection, it was discovered the cargo tank was leaking asphalt from multiple places on the tank. The driver was also found to be driving with a Disqualified CDL. Following the inspection, both the CMV and the driver were placed Out of Service.

Today, we’re celebrating the K-9s who serve alongside our Troopers and Officers across Georgia. They work hard, protect their partners and show up when they’re needed most but when the vest comes off, they’re still the loyal, loving companions who have earned a special place in their handlers’ hearts.

To our K-9s and their handlers, thank you for the trust, teamwork and countless hours you put into keeping Georgia safe. We’re proud to have you on our team.
