Truancy Intervention Project Georgia, Inc.

Truancy Intervention Project Georgia, Inc. Our mission is to empower Georgia’s youth through strategic partnerships with schools, courts, and communities.

We are dedicated to enhancing educational and life outcomes and fostering a future rich with opportunities that uplift Georgia communities. Since 1991, Truancy Intervention Project (TIP) Georgia has partnered with schools, courts, and communities to help students and families address the causes of truancy and create pathways to brighter futures. Alongside our dedicated volunteers, community partne

rs, and advocates, we work relentlessly to break generational cycles rooted in inequity and shift the narrative on absenteeism—one “marked present” at a time. TIP provides pro bono legal representation and advocacy for students facing chronic absenteeism, along with prevention services, individualized support for students and families, and programming to drive systemic change. We Believe:

🎒 There’s a story behind every absence. 'Stay in school' is easier said than done when a child is navigating harsh realities like unstable conditions, a lack of basic necessities, and mental health struggles.

📚 Truancy is a symptom of societal shortcomings. We must collectively tackle the root causes, not just the surface issues, to create lasting change.

👩‍👧‍👦 Families deserve support, not judgement. Compassion and understanding are the foundations of real progress, opening doors to collaboration and positive outcomes between students, families, and schools.

🙌 Even small wins are big. Every day a child is in school is a day they gain not just education but structure, stability, and support. We work to move each child forward, one day at a time.

As the school year winds down, the need for volunteer attorneys is especially important.

Upcoming court dates are critical moments for TIP students. You can help them finish the year strong and head into summer with the right support in place. If you're a licensed Georgia attorney, your advocacy in and out of court can provide real stability and direction for a child and family who need it most.

Open court dates:
⚖️ May 13
⚖️ May 19
⚖️ June 2
⚖️ June 16

TIP provides all training and support, with confirmed contact information and family attendance.

It makes perfect sense that Mother's Day and graduation season fall in the same month.

Behind so many diplomas, milestones, and moments of progress is a mom who has been there for the early wake-ups, the late-night project supply runs, the hard conversations, and everything in between.

Happy Mother's Day to every mom doing the hard work that doesn't always make the highlight reel.

You deserve extra credit, and then some. 🌟

Meet Darcy McLean, a dedicated advocate and valued partner for over a decade! 👏

Darcy’s connection to TIP began during her time at Georgia State Law, when she brought students to observe our courtroom process as part of an Alternative Spring Break experience focused on housing instability and education.

What she saw that day stayed with her: a collaborative group of stakeholders working as problem-solvers for students and families.

Today, as Director of Pro Bono & Community Engagement at Alston & Bird, Darcy continues to champion the power of legal advocacy and steady support.

For families navigating a complex legal system, having someone stand beside them can make all the difference.

“The clients may otherwise be going it alone through an intimidating, complex process with serious potential impact on their lives,” she says. “Your courage in standing with them in one of their most vulnerable moments is a gift, and as lawyers in a serving profession, it’s a gift we have a professional responsibility to give.” ⚖️

We’re grateful for Darcy’s vision, heart, and leadership in helping build a network of advocates for students and families.

Thank you, Darcy! 💙

Our Executive Director, Tonya Malone Ferguson, recently sat down with Mikey Wakefield on Cumulus Media’s Word on the Street to talk about TIP’s work and the challenges facing students and families across Georgia.

In this clip, Tonya discusses chronic absenteeism and how attendance issues have continued to evolve since COVID.

Thank you to Mikey Wakefield and Word on the Street for creating space for this important conversation. 💙

Is there any profession that goes above and beyond their job title quite like teachers? 🍎

Besides educators, they are the trusted adults who show up day after day, equipped with endless patience and Kleenex. The ones arriving early to decorate the classroom, then staying late to meet with parents or attend the band performance.

They spend their "quiet" moments finding a lost coat, listening to a story that needs telling, or quietly slipping food into a student’s backpack for the weekend.

They see the potential in our kids long before they see it in themselves.

Teachers, what can we say? We can’t thank you enough for the countless ways you show up for our youth. We hope you truly feel the love, this and beyond.

Drop a note of appreciation for a teacher in your life! 👇

April is , and while we often focus on adult burnout, many students also carry invisible weight. 💔

This viral poem by author Joshua T. Dickerson—inspired by an interaction he witnessed right here in an Atlanta school—poignantly captures the realities many TIP clients face. It’s a reminder that what looks like disengagement in the classroom is often the result of an exhausting battle fought before the school bell even rings.

Behind a student’s lack of supplies or a missed day of school is often a young person navigating housing instability, caretaking for siblings, or unmet basic needs. At TIP, we work to address these hidden stressors with compassion.

Let’s commit to looking beneath the surface and providing the mental health support and advocacy our students need to thrive.

Every day in the classroom is a victory, especially during testing season. To cheer on our students during this critical final stretch, we’re rewarding the habit of showing up.

The Challenge: Maintain perfect attendance for 10 consecutive days from April 27th through May 8th.

The Reward: Students will be entered in a raffle to win one of two $100 gift cards! 🎟️

We see the hard work you’re putting in. Let’s finish this school year strong. 💪

Your inbox was full. Your calendar was packed. You had a hundred reasons to say, “Maybe next time.”

You gave your time anyway.

To every TIP volunteer who has walked alongside a student and their family—thank you.

Your impact starts in the courtroom, but lives on in the classroom, the home, and the hearts of young people who will never forget that you showed up. The ripple effects of your advocacy have no end, and neither does our gratitude.

Happy to our incredible community of change-makers! ⚖️✨

Our first Small Groups program for the 2025-2026 school year is a wrap, and we're so proud of this crew! Over six weeks, 4th- and 5th-graders at partner schools learned to build strong habits, manage the barriers that keep them from class, and advocate for themselves.

Equipped with new routines and confidence, these students are ready to show up—for school, for themselves, and for their futures. 💪
