Gateway Center

Gateway Center GWC is a proven leader in the Atlanta community and has positioned ourselves to be adaptable to respond to the needs of those experiencing homelessness.

GWC provides more than 330 places for men who enter into programs geared to address the underlying reasons for their homelessness, such as unemployment, addictions, mental illness or domestic abuse. The Gateway Center is filled to capacity nearly every day of the year. Including those people who turn to the Gateway Center for point in time services (bathrooms and showers, laundry, clothing, storage, clinic), we serve over 500 people every day.

Homelessness in Atlanta has increased by 6%.

shared that at least 3,060 people are experiencing homelessness this year. That means about 173 additional people are homeless compared to 2025.

So what does 3,060 people look like?

🚊That’s enough people to fill roughly 60 MARTA rail cars.
🏘️It’s about the population of a small Georgia town.
👉The increase of 173 people alone would require the equivalent of a large apartment complex’s worth of additional housing.

We were proud to have Gateway Center’s own Amanda Van Dalen participate in the panel discussion, where she shared early successes from our new Accelerated Shelter Exit strategy. Through intentional care coordination, housing-focused case management, and targeted support services, guests in this program are exiting shelter in an average of just 48 days, compared to the current system-wide average of 108 days.

This is what becomes possible when innovation, collaboration, and resources align around people who need support the most. Every investment in housing, behavioral health, workforce support, and wraparound services creates opportunities for stability, dignity, and new beginnings.

Thanks for this discussion!

When Mr. Williams first arrived at Gateway Center’s Evolution Center, life felt uncertain. The low-barrier shelter became more than just a place to stay, it became a place where he could finally begin to stabilize, breathe, and focus on his next chapter.

Day by day, with support from staff who wanted the absolute best for him, Mr. Williams started rebuilding his foundation. As his situation improved, he transitioned into the Veteran Program. That support led to a major breakthrough.

Today, Mr. Williams has secured permanent housing and successfully obtained his Social Security benefits, milestones that once may have felt out of reach.

His journey is a reminder that homelessness is not the end of someone’s story. With the right support system and determination, new beginnings are possible.

These two bags may be all someone owns. Their life's items, in two bags. Those two bags following someone experiencing homelessness through long nights, uncertain days, and where survival is the only goal.

But when our outreach team shares how life could be, their steps have meaning once they walk through the Gateway Center doors. We give them clothes, toiletries, legal papers, keys to their new home, and a new desire to win in life.

After enrolling in the Downtown Rising program, Mr. Perry’s life began to take a remarkable turn.

“I just wanted to thank you again for helping me secure this apartment and share a quick update. I absolutely love it. After spending the past year in and out of shelters, having a place of my own has truly been a blessing,” said Perry. “I’m also proud to say I’m now a little over six weeks seizure-free. On top of that, I picked up some additional freelance AV work, and something incredible happened — the owner of one of the companies I was supporting was so impressed with my experience that he offered me a full-time position.”

Life has truly turned around for Mr. Perry and Gateway Center is so thankful for the Downtown Rising Program that helped get him to this point.

A special thank you and heartfelt appreciation to the Leadership Atlanta Project Team that partnered with Gateway Center consisting of Nkem Chukwumerije, Mariangela Corales, Jenni Hawkins, Valerie R. Love, Bryan Stillwagon, Darius Bates, Donnie Beamer Jr., Mo Ivory, and Ollie McCoy.

This exceptional group of accomplished leaders, innovative thinkers, and community champions brought forward invaluable insights, strategic guidance, and genuine partnership. Their work is already shaping how we strengthen our fundraising strategies, evaluate our service model, deepen community partnerships, and expand our impact. More importantly, they helped us think out or the box by challenging and affirming our approach in ways that will have a lasting effect on how we serve.

Because of this partnership, Gateway Center is better positioned to advance our next 3 year strategic plan and continue amplifying our message of Everybody vs. Homelessness. The impact of their contributions will be felt not only within our organization, but in the lives of the guests we serve and ultimately in the City of Atlanta.

We are deeply grateful to Leadership Atlanta and this outstanding Project Team for investing their time, talent, and heart into our work. Each of you individually and collectively have been a blessing to Gateway Center!
