Latin American immigrants ages 60 and over gather weekly at the Latin American Association - Asociación Latinoamericana for fellowship, lots of activities and the celebration of American holidays that blend the traditional turkey with trimmings such as fried sweet plantains and tamales.

Proposed changes that would redefine the terms by which an immigrant is considered likely to become a "public charge" could cause a significant drop in legal immigration and hurt Georgia’s children, families and economy, according to a report just released by the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute.

"The chilling effect would be significant," says the report.

Immigration expert and The New York Times Opinion Section writer Sonia Nazario, a child of immigrants, explains her plan to fix immigration, as the caravan of Central American migrants nears the U.S.

"While we work to address root causes [in the countries of origin], we must remain compassionate toward those who make it to our borders and ask for safety. Our laws protect their right to do so.

This fiscal year, 50,036 unaccompanied migrant children were apprehended coming to the United States. They wouldn’t even fill up half a Penn State football stadium. That’s refugee dust, as one friend quipped — especially given the fact that the world is facing the worst refugee crisis since World War II."

A record 29 million Latinos are eligible to vote nationwide in the 2018 midterm elections, says the Pew Research Center. Latinos now make up 12.8% of all eligible voters.

Driven mostly by young U.S.-born Hispanics coming of age, 4 million Latinos became eligible to vote in the past four years. Other sources of growth include Hispanic immigrant naturalizations, as well as residents of Puerto Rico moving stateside, especially to Florida.

However, Latino voter turnout rates have declined since 2006, says Pew. In 2014, the turnout rate among Latino eligible voters dropped to a record low of 27%.

Proposed Trump administration changes to the definition of "public charge" could have devastating consequences for our country's immigrant population.

Immigration advocates argue that this policy would make life more difficult for those immigrants who are lawfully present in the U.S., and would result in a reduction in legal immigration.

"The proposed changes are designed to keep the American Dream out of reach for countless families across the country, scare families from accessing vital benefits to which they are legally entitled and to stifle them from seeking assistance," according to FWD.us, a national group that advocates for immigration reform. "This policy is specifically designed to intimidate lawfully present individuals from accessing benefits for themselves and their children, benefits to which they are legally entitled, even though they are living in the U.S. via long-standing legal channels."

The Houston, Texas metro area has one of the most diverse and fastest-growing populations in the country. Indeed, in 2017 Latinos surpassed whites as the area's largest ethnic or racial group. Even in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, Houston's economy continues to boom. The city is home to 1.6 million immigrants, a much larger number than in the entire state of Georgia.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, the country's fourth largest city offers an interesting look at how national immigration policy changes under the Trump administration are being felt by immigrants and service providers at the local level.

Now that the Department of Homeland Security's public charge rule has been posted in the Federal Register, let's express our opposition to this rule change by posting comments in FWD.us's comment page.

According to FWD.us, here's what's at stake:

If the policy is changed, U.S. immigration officials could deny green cards to immigrants simply because they are not wealthy, have a preexisting health condition or have received public benefits. This rule will cause immigrant families to be afraid to provide basic food and health care for their loved ones. ... Public charge has never been interpreted so broadly, in a way that would have such tragic consequences for immigrant families, our communities and the future of our country.
