Dear Educators,

As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, ISB Atlanta recognizes that teaching about the events of September 11, 2001, and their lasting impact on our world can be a significant challenge. Educators are tasked not only with helping students understand a pivotal moment in American history, but also with fostering respectful, inclusive learning environments where all students feel safe and valued.

Studies have shown, and anecdotes have illustrated, that more than half of school-age Muslim students reported being bullied at school because of their religion (that is twice the reported national average for all students). Nearly one-third of Muslim students report being cyberbullied online by their peers. There are certain times of the year when Muslim students can become the focus of threatening and intimidating situations: 9/11, Muslim holidays and the holy month of Ramadan, and even during a World Religions section of a Social Studies class.

To help classroom teachers, school administrators, parents and community organizations to address these issues and prevent bullying, ISB Atlanta’s Resource Center has prepared Guidelines for Teaching about 9/11 in the Classroom which is attached to this email.

In addition, our Resource Center has free downloadable guides for addressing anti-Muslim bullying, holding Hard Conversations in Difficult Times, a calendar of Muslim Holidays and Observances and many other helpful resources.

We’re proud to celebrate Soumaya Khalifa, Founder and Executive Director of ISB Atlanta, who was recognized with the Defender’s Award at the Georgia Democracy Resilience Network’s 2026 Civic Excellence Awards.
