Georgia School Nutrition Program

Georgia School Nutrition Program A Division of the Georgia Department of Education. Georgia’s School Nutrition Programs are helping our children succeed!

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) in Georgia provide nutritious and tasty meals to school children each day. School meals help combat childhood hunger while providing nutritious food choices at age-appropriate calorie levels to address the issue of childhood obesity. School meals promote healthy eating behaviors and offer opportunities to practice skills l

earned in classroom nutrition education. Georgia School Nutrition Programs serve approximately one-half million breakfasts and 1 million lunches daily. In addition, many Georgia schools offer healthy meal supplements in the Afterschool Care Program and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), which provide more opportunities for Georgia students to receive healthy foods and nutrition education while at school. Through the Seamless Summer Option (SSO), summer meals are available in some areas so Georgia’s children can continue to receive a nourishing meal throughout the summer when school is not in session.

Enchiladas, plantains, and yuca fries in a Georgia school cafeteria? In Marietta City Schools, it’s by design.

In the Season 6 premiere of FuelCast, Director of School Nutrition Dr. Cindy Culver describes building a menu that reflects her students’ cultures so that kids new to the country feel at home from their very first tray. She shares that when she sits down to eat the meal herself, she’s transported straight back to her own childhood. It’s one more example of how quality school meals and student and community engagement go hand in hand in Marietta.

Don’t miss the full conversation with Dr. Culver and Superintendent Dr. Grant Rivera on leadership, professional development, and building a school nutrition program the whole community can rally around.
