Cancer Prevention Study - 3

Cancer Prevention Study - 3 PLEASE NOTE: Participating on this page self identifies your involvement (participation) i Participants can expect to receive this survey in May 2015.

In December 2013, the American Cancer Society completed the initial recruitment of its newest study, Cancer Prevention Study-3, with over 304,000 participants. The American Cancer Society's Epidemiology Research Program invited men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 years who had no personal history of cancer to join this historic research study. The ultimate goal was to enroll at least 300,0

00 adults from various racial and ethnic backgrounds from across the United States and Puerto Rico. The successful completion of this enrollment was built on the partnership of Society staff and over 30,000 volunteers with enrollments being conducted at over 800 Relay For Life events, 100 Society events including Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and over 2,000 corporate, hospital and community partner hosted events. CPS-3 has participants from all over the United States and Puerto Rico with average age at enrollment of 47 years. Now that we have completed the initial recruitment of our participants, we will be shifting our efforts to the next phase of the study called follow-up, which includes our first follow-up survey for the entire population. In addition to our follow-up survey, a small group of CPS-3 participants will be invited to participate in one of two sub-studies that we will be conducting this year on diet, physical activity, light and sleep patterns. These sub-studies are an essential component to maintaining the highest scientific standards in our study.

A study co-authored by Dr. Caroline Um and Christina Newton, MSPH, revealed that engaging in higher levels of physical activity measured by a combination of time and intensity is linked to lower odds of developing colore**al cancer. This association holds true across all molecular and genetic subtypes of diseases. To learn more about how exercise may reduce the risk of all types of colore**al cancer, click below:

A large study (which used CPS-II data) found that physical activity reduced the risk of developing both colon and re**al cancer for all subtypes, especially in men.

• 55,410 in men
• 53,450 in women
📌 49,990 new cases of re**al cancer

The American Cancer Society has released key findings from Cancer Statistics, 2026. The report, published annually since 1951, is considered the gold standard for cancer surveillance information. Findings from this report show that the 5-year relative survival rate for all cancers combined has reached a milestone of 70% for people diagnosed from 2015 to 2021, up from 49% in the mid-1970s due to the advances in treatment and earlier diagnosis for some cancers.
