Have you ever wondered why Our House offers so many programs?

Our House provides a full range of services because families at-risk of or experiencing homelessness rarely face just one challenge. Housing instability is often connected to job loss, health issues, childcare gaps, and more.

Addressing just one issue rarely leads to lasting stability.

Our House provides a comprehensive range of coordinated services designed to help families experiencing homelessness and housing instability move from crisis to lasting stability. Programs offer family shelter, free early childhood education and childcare, free comprehensive healthcare, free job training and workforce development with paid internships, and individualized case management, because stable housing alone is rarely enough to help a family thrive long-term.

By investing in both children and parents at the same time, every family leaves with the tools for lasting self-sufficiency and wellbeing. To learn more about Our House or its programs, visit https://ourhousega.org/programs/

On Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who gave everything in service to this country. Part of that legacy is the promise that no family should be left without a foundation to stand on. At Our House, that promise drives everything we do. Families in our programs are building something from the ground up, with the hope that what they create will last for generations. This Memorial Day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and recommit to the work of building a community where every family has a place to call home. https://ourhousega.org/

Amber was a public health professional helping connect vulnerable families to resources across Atlanta. Then domestic violence turned her own life upside down.

While working full-time, Amber was secretly navigating abuse, hiding bruises, missing work out of fear, and trying to protect her young daughter while pretending everything was okay.

What makes her story so powerful is that almost nobody around her knew the tremendous burdens she was carrying. “On the outside, I looked like I had it together,” she says. “But homelessness doesn’t have a look.”

Today, Amber is living independently, raising her daughter in a stable home, finishing her college degree, and rebuilding a life rooted in peace instead of survival.

Read her powerful story and learn:
• Why so many women hesitate to seek help
• The dangerous assumptions people make about homelessness
• What she wants people to understand about homelessness
• Why she says “home” means something completely different to her now
• And the Christmas moment with her daughter that made her realize just how far they’d come

Did you know that you don’t have to be in the Our House Housing or shelter program to access services with Our House Health or to enroll in our early childhood education program?

Our House Health is open to anyone in the Atlanta community who needs care and is uninsured with a low income. Services are free of charge and appointments aren’t required for most services. The clinic serves children, women, and men, and operates on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday at 173 Boulevard NE in Atlanta.

Our House Early Childhood Education is available to families in the surrounding community as well. The free, NAEYC-accredited program serves children ages 6 weeks to 5 years whose families are experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Metro Atlanta, and enrollment is open year-round at three Atlanta area locations.

Research published in JAMA Psychiatry found that 67% of people experiencing homelessness are living with a mental health disorder. That’s more than four times the rate seen in the general population.

For families already navigating housing instability, job loss, trauma, and the daily weight of uncertainty, access to mental and behavioral health care can be a critical component impacting their ability to regain stability.

The challenge is that accessing that care is difficult for almost everyone. Without insurance, therapy sessions range from $90 to $300 or more per visit. And having insurance does not guarantee access. Many practices do not accept it, waitlists can stretch for months, and out of pocket costs can make even covered care unaffordable.

For families experiencing homelessness, most of whom have no insurance at all, those barriers make accessing mental and behavioral healthcare all but impossible.

Our House Health offers free comprehensive healthcare, including mental and behavioral health services, to people in the Atlanta community who are uninsured and have a low income. The clinic serves men, women, and children. Care is completely free, no insurance or copays needed, and no red tape standing between you and the support you need. Clients do not have to be experiencing homelessness or enrolled in the Our House shelter program to receive services.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, the theme is "More Good Days, Together." At Our House, that is the forever goal for our families. To learn more or access free mental health services, call Our House Health at 404-658-1500.

We’re honored and excited to share that Our House has been recognized by the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University.

In its newly published Solutions Spotlight on the importance of stability in early childhood, Harvard features Our House in the Policy Snapshot section as an example of a solution in action. For us, this recognition is deeply meaningful because it affirms the importance of stability in early childhood and the power it has to promote lifelong health and wellbeing. When children and families have access to safe housing, quality early childhood education, comprehensive healthcare, and the wraparound support they need to move forward, it improves nearly ever facet of their life.

We are proud to do this work in Metro Atlanta, and even prouder of the staff, family advocates, partners, donors, and supporters who make it possible every day. Thank you to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University for spotlighting solutions that communities across the country can learn from. A quick snapshot into one of our events earlier this month! This year, Our House was the charity of choice for the Pour Into Her organization, run by Atlanta radio host Jojo Alonso, on 96.1 The Beat.

This family day was full of fun, food, and community building! It was a great way to treat Our House families to some fun and relaxation. We are so thankful to our community, and to Jojo for making it happen!
