Did you know that every time you see a Carvana car hauler on the road, it was made right here in Georgia?

Founded as Cottrell-Sullivan by Don Cotrell and John Sullivan, Cottrell Inc. has been building car hauling trailers in Hall County since 1975. The company grew quickly and had expanded overseas by 1997 when they began selling equipment in Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Australia, and South Africa.

The company was acquired by Markel in 2014, but remains headquartered in Gainesville, and is still a leader in the industry – delivering more than 50,000 trailers since their inception more than a half century ago.

Next time you pass a car on the way to its new home, you'll know you're seeing another instance of Georgia's manufacturing excellence in action.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation Volume 🏝️🏝️:

School might be back, but summer lives on! To continue our Summer Series, Atlanta Regional Economic Development Manager Ashley West shared with us a photo from the world's largest 10K race!

The Peachtree Road Race began on July 4, 1970 with 150 runners who met at the corner of Peachtree and Roswell Road and finished the 6.2 miles in Central City (now Woodruff) Park.

The following year, Carling Brewing became the event’s first sponsor, allowing the addition of a race-day t-shirt. In 1976, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution became the title sponsor of the event, which had grown to include over 1000 participants. A cap of 25,000 runners was placed in response to congestion concerns in 1980 but then extended to 40,000 a decade later. The Shepherd Center's Wheelchair Division was added in 1982, and technological advancements came online in 2009 which allow every participant to now be electronically timed.

Today, the race is an annual tradition that attracts 60,000 runners and walkers. The roads lining the route are shut down, and friends and neighbors from all around Metro Atlanta line the path to cheer on the city.

This July 4th marked Ashley’s second time running in the Peachtree, and she and thousands of her friends agree that it’s truly a “party on the pavement.”

The first Blue Bird Corporation bus, affectionately known as "Blue Bird Number One" was completed in 1927 by Albert Luce, a World War I veteran and Ford Motor Company dealer, and sold to a Marshallville resident with the purpose of transporting rural children to and from school.

After the onset of the Great Depression, Luce sold his Ford dealerships and used the proceeds to shift his concentration entirely to bus building. By the 1980s, Blue Bird would be the highest-volume bus manufacturer in the United States.

Today, Blue Bird buses are still trusted the world over to safely transport children to and from school, and nearly 100 years after Blue Bird Number One, the company is still innovating – introducing a line of electric buses in 2018 that has since expanded, placing Blue Bird at the forefront of the sustainable transportation movement.

So as you start to see buses full of children on your morning and afternoon commutes again, remember that their journey started nearly a century ago, right here in Georgia.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation 🌞🏝️

As we celebrate the end of summer and prepare for back to school, we're spotlighting some of our favorite summer activities from around the state – as told to us by our regional economic development managers. Our Southeast Regional Manager, Jason Coley, spent some time this summer fishing the waters off Sapelo Island. Accessible only by passenger ferry, Sapelo is a remote get-away attracting those that enjoy the quiet marine life. Located 60 miles south of Savannah, the state-managed barrier island is home to both lush ecosystems and rich history. And with The University of Georgia Marine Institute right there, Sapelo is also an incubator for ecological studies.

Jason is one of many that enjoys the abundance of fishing in Sapelo, where there are more than 10,000 spots to choose from, with fishing charters and guides to help you catch flounder, redfish, and more. According to Captain Experiences, summer is the best time to fish on Sapelo, and that most adventurers book 32 days in advance.

As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we're celebrating not only our nation's independence but also 250 years of innovation, resilience, and growth since we signed our Declaration of Independence.

Nowhere does that feel more evident than right here in Georgia.

Georgia’s spirit is about communities and opportunity. It’s about building careers, strengthening supply chains, and creating long-term prosperity across both rural and urban Georgia.

Every day, Georgians are growing the food that feeds our nation, manufacturing the products that move our economy, and dreaming up the innovations that keep us moving forward.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we’re reminded that economic development is one of the most powerful ways we carry forward the promise of this country, ensuring the next generation has even greater opportunities than the last.

On this monumental anniversary, we salute our state, and all the economic developers that carry on the tradition of bringing opportunity to Georgia

On Friday, we joined our friends and partners across the state for the 2026 Georgia Logistics Summit in Savannah, where industry leaders, site selectors, and economic developers came together to explore what’s next for supply chains, infrastructure, and global connectivity. The message was clear: speed, certainty, and scalability are no longer advantages, they’re expectations.

But Georgia remains at a distinct advantage when it comes to transportation. Here are just a few of our many takeaways from last week's event:

• Intermodal connectivity is Georgia’s edge — Seamless integration across road, rail, air, and the Port of Savannah continues to position the state as a global logistics hub
