The City of South Fulton (South Fulton Police Department and South Fulton - GA Fire Rescue) recently concluded its Active Shooter Multi-Agency Simulated Exercises, marking a significant step in enhancing community safety and preparedness. As communications is a critical piece to any successful operations, Fulton County Department of Emergency Services was also present. By spreading the training over multiple weeks, all emergency response squads had the opportunity to participate, ensuring a comprehensive approach to handling potential threats. These exercises are crucial for first responders, as they provide a realistic environment to hone their skills, improve coordination, and develop effective strategies for rapid response. The collaborative nature of the training fosters inter-agency communication and teamwork, which are vital components in managing critical incidents efficiently. Such proactive measures not only bolster the confidence and readiness of first responders but also reassure the community of their commitment to safety and protection.

Week Three of the Fulton County Citizens’ University (FCCU) featured an in depth look at Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA) and Fulton County Department of Emergency Services (FCDES). During the 911 segment, participants learned about emerging technologies, Next Generation 911 (NG911), professional development of staff, as well as the daily operations. Students were also afforded the opportunity to complete a tour of the facility and complete a sit-in, where they were able to observe live operations and engage with persons behind the headset.

Next Generation 911 (NG911) is the modernization of Georgia’s emergency communications 911 infrastructure.

NG911 allows us to improve location accuracy, call routing while supporting text messages, pictures, video, and information sharing across jurisdictions.

House Resolution 1243 is a proposed constitutional amendment that will appear on the November 2026 ballot. If approved by Georgia voters, it would authorize the General Assembly to create a dedicated Georgia Next Generation 911 Fund. The fund will support 911 operations, infrastructure, technology, workforce needs, and the transition to Next Generation 911.
