Today, is my 47th birthday! My gift to myself and the city I adore is to make sure that predatory use of eminent domain does not become business as usual in Atlanta and that those running for office in this election, who will qualify today (the last day of qualifying for the Nov. 7 election) are on the record about whether they will use their power as government officials to displace those who vote them into office.

My neighbors, Robert and Bertha Darden, with whom I've fought the good fight and stood for more than 4 years are now family and I love them dearly. They have lived in their home for almost 30 years and have raised their children and grandchildren in the warm and cozy place that is a part of their family. Their day in court yesterday should end in victory, in light of an email from a city engineer presented in court confirming, "the City doesn't have technical data to support the land acquisition and proposed design underway in Peoplestown."

This is OUTRAGEOUS!! The City started the project before they had the data to support it and still they displaced more than 20 families who didn't have to go. Instead of protecting me and my neighbors (her constituents) from the City's predatory action unsupported by technical data CARLA SMITH WROTE THE ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING EMINENT DOMAIN WITHOUT INFORMING HER COLLEAGUES ON THE COUNCIL THAT THOSE PARCELS WERE OWNER OCCUPIED HOMES AND THAT THEY WERE NOT NECESSARY TO MITIGATE THE FLOODING IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!!

Shameful is a generous characterization of her actions. District 1 and the Atlanta City Council deserve better representation than she has provided and I encourage folks to question the competency of a leader who acts to displace those she is supposed to represent.

For my birthday, please like and share this message and the links below about the Dardens' case and the evidence we presented in court yesterday. Predatory use of eminent domain is happening across the nation and we need to stand against its use in Atlanta to displace working class, poor, and black and brown people. We can't be a city too busy to hate people if we are a city willing to displace people!

Thank you!!

Peace,
Tanya

As many of you know, I was inspired to run for the District 1 seat on the Atlanta City Council out of the experience of being among those homeowners in Peoplestown targeted by the City's misuse of eminent domain. I responded to community residents asking for better representation in District 1. I offered myself as a candidate for City Council District 1 to help to shine a light on people and their interests,
to fight for the needs of communities that are often exploited by predatory practices and policies like displacement, and to empower those who have been left out of the progress the City celebrates.

In the meantime, we have been in litigation for almost 10 months and we expected that we would prevail before the campaign shifted into high gear. Unfortunately, an adverse ruling by the court requires that I turn my full attention to the case and the fight to make sure that the city does not use its power to displace even more people simply to make room for parks, ponds and other luxuries.

I am undaunted, and we will appeal this decision and continue this 4 year fight for justice with my neighbors whose homes and communities are also under attack. This appeal and the threat to my home and family will require a great deal of energy and focus, which would make it difficult to run a successful campaign.

It is with a heavy heart and clear vision, that I have made the hard decision to suspend the campaign to focus on our case and my neighbors' case and to fight for precedence that limits the use of eminent domain to those rare circumstances when it is the only option. I regret having to withdraw from the campaign, but I do not regret having entered it.

I am grateful for those who endorsed me and those who raised money for me and for the countless conversations with my neighbors and other Atlanta residents about how good representation can improve their quality of life. The love and support of people like you have sustained me and helped me to champion a people-powered cause that serves everyone, not just the privileged and the powerful.

While I am withdrawing from the campaign, I am not withdrawing from the fight for affordable housing, sustainable infrastructure, sound and responsive leadership and representation that is inclusive and accessible. Our campaign has highlighted these issues and I've used the resources raised to make sure the things that matter to people are prioritized and that those running for office are responding to them accordingly. I will continue to serve and I will be active to ensure that our elected officials represent the interests of the people who vote them into office and who make District 1 and the City of Atlanta such a special place.

Your prayers, encouragement and donations have allowed me to make sure that these issues are priorities and I am grateful for and humbled by the outpouring of support. I have spent all of the resources we've raised to that end. If you would like to discuss your investment in our efforts, please contact me directly.

Thank you for everything. I appreciate your belief in our efforts for fair, responsible and inclusive leadership for District 1 and for the City of Atlanta more than you will ever know! I am truly grateful.

I will continue to fight the good fight on these cases and in the community, at meetings, at city hall and beyond.

Thank you for your continued support, prayers and words of encouragement. "The people united will never be defeated!"

Peace,
Tanya

Recent attacks on Islam, Muslims and Muslim communities have made the work of CAIR all the more challenging and important. Here in GA our Muslim neighbors have been harassed for their dress and their faith. Our democracy does not tolerate this kind of discrimination. We are better than that! As a member of the Atlanta City Council I will introduce and support legislation that protects and promotes the rights of vulnerable residents who are targeted with discriminatory practices. I value and embrace the presence and contributions of my Muslim neighbors who live in District 1! Happy to be here with my friends at CAIR who are doing the important work of making sure our democracy works for EVERYONE!!

It is the last day of July and we need your help to keep our momentum going and finish the month strong!

The support I received at the end of June to close out the quarter was amazing and I am grateful for your generosity and confidence in our campaign. We need to work hard to bring better representation to District 1 and the people of Atlanta. We need to be the voice of reason and justice for those who have been ignored and marginalized. And I need your help to make it happen.

Please consider giving $31 today, July 31st, to help us close the month out strong: https://act.myngp.com/Forms/4725494192760424960

Change happens from the ground up, as Civil Rights leader and Congressman John Lewis has taught us through his life-long commitment to public service. I want to provide the same kind of people-centered leadership on the Atlanta City Council that Congressman Lewis did. We can enact real change in Atlanta by bringing fair, honest, determined leadership to the Atlanta City Council. I promise to represent ALL the people in District 1. I promise to fight for a government that works for the people, not against them. Help me get there!

Give $31 today, July 31st, and help me create a community that works for ALL Atlanta residents: https://act.myngp.com/Forms/4725494192760424960

Why the U-Turn on Affordable Housing in Atlanta?
This article asks an important question: "Why has Atlanta’s varsity team of affordable housing experts – people who have a national track record of transforming communities – been placed on the sidelines in Atlanta during the Reed administration?"

Our leadership must have the political will to make affordable housing a priority. We deserve and demand a District 1 and City of Atlanta for EVERYONE!!

We need better leadership at City Hall. Leadership that makes government work for the people and not against them. Leadership that fights for what we want and deserve for our communities. And Tanya needs your help to get there! Our important deadline is MIDNIGHT TONIGHT!

Will you chip in $5 or more to show that you are ready for bold, progressive leadership in Atlanta? Help us raise the final $1,254 to reach our goal before we submit our public report. https://act.myngp.com/Forms/4725494192760424960

Last night at AFSCME's Candidate Forum, Tanya joined more than 30 candidates for Atlanta City Council seats. The importance of this election is clear-- Atlanta will have a new Mayor and at least 7 new City Council members. But we don't just want new people in office we want new leadership, new ideas and people who will serve the people. Tanya made clear last night that she supports affordable housing, wages that allow city workers to live in the City of Atlanta, and transportation that allows them to get to jobs that pay a livable wage.

Tanya is connecting with voters, fighting for justice, and talking about the issues that matter to Atlanta. Issues such as education, public safety, housing, traffic control measures, infrastructure, job creation, criminal justice reform. We need to continue our momentum and end this quarter with this strong message: Tanya is committed to faithfully serve the people and will not cater to the desires of developers and politicians that would rather rule than serve.

We need your support TODAY! Help us reach this critical goal by chipping in $5 or more by midnight! https://act.myngp.com/Forms/4725494192760424960

During the month of June, our campaign has been busy!!

We worked with Turner Field communities to ensure that we were included in the City's budget. Despite not having been included in the original budget, our advocacy resulted in up to $5 million committed to a trust fund established for our communities. We did it!!

We also responded to a request from one of our endorsers, the International Brotherhood of Police, to support their request for a pay increase for Atlanta police officers. Despite our best efforts, the City did not include a pay increase in the budget. We will continue to work with police to ensure that they are paid a wage reflective of the important work that they do and so that Atlanta can attract, train and retain police committed to professional policing that keeps our neighborhoods and community members safe. We will keep fighting!

In the eminent domain cases targeting several homes in my District, including my own, we had our day in court! The City's case revealed the absence of engineering evidence supporting the City's taking of private homes in District 1. A trial in another case begins July 13 and we will be ready!!

Mawuli Davis, Robert Bozeman and the Davis Bozeman Law Firm hosted an amazing fundraiser for our campaign. We had the opportunity to raise funds that will allow us to reach more voters with our message about smart leadership that listens! We are so grateful to Mawuli and Robert!!

We received the endorsement of another union-- the American Federation of Government Employees Local #1568! This endorsement came just as the City Council voted to increase the wages of city employees to $15 per hour over the next 3 years. We will continue to work with Fight for $15 and other organizations and organizers to ensure that all of Atlanta's workforce earns a wage that allows them to live in the City of Atlanta!

Our campaign can't afford to wait until I get elected to City Council to support neighbors and communities in District 1. We are working, as we campaign, to advance and address the interests of my District 1 neighbors and communities NOW!

We are nearing the end of June and it is LAST CALL for donations for this disclosure period. Please help us make a strong financial showing that communicates that we are serious about winning this race and providing representation for everyone in District 1.

Please consider making a donation of $5, $25, $50 or $100 to help us reach voters across District 1: https://act.myngp.com/Forms/4725494192760424960

Thank you for your donation, for supporting our campaign and for helping us to reach our voters!

06/19/2017

Today on Juneteenth we celebrate the liberation of formerly enslaved people of African ancestry, who did not gain their freedom until several years after the Emancipation Proclamation was passed. The holiday represents the desire of us all to be free from policies, practices and laws that restrict our creativity, limit our potential, and diminish our value. On this Juneteenth, our Atlanta City Council has an opportunity to budget for $15 an hour for its employees, to raise the pay of our first responders to wages paid in comparably sized cities, and to prioritize communities over stadiums and parks, by taking money from the sale of Turner Field and investing it in the communities surrounding the stadium, rather than devoting it to upgrades for Phillips Arena. In the spirit of Juneteenth the public officials who were elected by and who work for the people should liberate their constituents from a budget that priorities luxuries over basics, and give the people of Atlanta what they need! Happy Juneteenth Y'all!!

If you would like to support our campaign with a donation go to https://act.myngp.com/Forms/4725494192760424960.

Happy Father's Day!

Today we celebrate those who in their roles and relationships as fathers have guided, nurtured, supported and loved their children and the children entrusted to them. The power and value of these men in our homes and communities cannot be overstated. On this day I celebrate all of the men who make the world a safer, better place to live!!

As the City Councilperson for District One, I will push for and support policies like job training, affordable housing, and a livable wage that allow men in our communities to care for themselves, their families and their children and to carry themselves with the dignity and respect they deserve.
