We are excited to announce that the Nursing Schools Grant application is now open!

Georgia’s nursing programs play an important role in preparing the health care workforce our communities depend on. The Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce (GBHCW) is supporting that work through the Nursing Schools Grant, offering up to $500,000 per program. The grant is designed for Georgia nursing programs with waitlists that are working to increase enrollment and the number of graduates entering Georgia’s health workforce.

Grant Highlights:
• Up to $500,000 per program
• Available to programs offering RN or LVN degrees
• Grant funding can be used for equipment
• Supports increased enrollment and training capacity
• Helps expand the pipeline of nursing graduates in Georgia

Application Open: September 1st, 2026
Deadline: December 15, 2026

Applications for our loan repayment programs open tomorrow!

This is your reminder that the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce Loan Repayment Application Cycle opens September 1, 2026.

Application Window: September 1 – October 12, 2026
Final Deadline: October 12 at 5:00 PM ET

The GBHCW administers service-cancelable loan repayment programs designed to help strengthen Georgia’s health care workforce while assisting eligible professionals with educational debt.

Eligible professionals include:
• Physicians
• Dentists
• Physician Assistants
• Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs)
• Behavioral Health Providers
• Nurse Faculty

Recipients receive assistance with eligible debt incurred through their professional education in exchange for a commitment to full-time service in a Georgia county approved by the Board.

Applications must be completed and submitted online. Mailed, faxed, or emailed applications cannot be accepted. The application portal will be available beginning September 1, and our Application Guide is available to help applicants understand the process and prepare their materials.

For dentists and dental students thinking about what comes next in their careers, the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce offers loan repayment programs that can help reduce educational debt while supporting access to dental care in rural Georgia.

Through the Dentists for Rural Areas Assistance Program (DRAA), licensed dentists may receive up to $25,000 per year in service-cancelable loan repayment to help repay outstanding dental education debt.

The Georgia Dentist Education Loan Repayment Program (GDELRP) offers up to $150,000 over four years to licensed dentists and fourth-year dental students to assist with outstanding dental education loan debt.

These programs support professionals who commit to practicing full-time in an eligible underserved, rural Georgia county.

For dental professionals looking to serve where they can make a difference while receiving help with educational debt, rural Georgia may be worth considering.

Georgia’s Physician Workforce: 2023–2024 Licensure Data

The 2023–2024 renewal cycle marks the 35th year the GBHCW has examined physician supply, demand, and distribution across Georgia. The latest data from the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce (GBHCW) highlights significant gaps in physician access across Georgia.

During the 2023–2024 physician renewal cycle we found:

-10 counties without Physicians
-42 counties without Internal medicine Physicians
-19 counties without Family Medicine Physicians
-63 counties without Pediatricians
-77 counties without Emergency Medicine Physicians
-82 counties without OB/GYNs
-95 counties without Psychiatrists
-83 counties without General Surgeons

During the 2023-2024 renewal cycle, a total of 48,744 physicians either renewed their licenses (38,537) or applied for a new license (10,207). Of these, 20,790 physicians were removed from the count because they indicated they were either retired or currently not working (1,830), in residency or fellowship (2,768), or not practicing in the state of Georgia (16,192).

This leaves a valid physician workforce of 27,954 physicians who are licensed and actively practicing in Georgia, an increase from 2022's figure of 27,750. This represents approximately a 0.74% increase from 2024

While Georgia’s physician workforce continues to grow, these numbers show that access to care remains uneven across the state, particularly in rural and underserved communities. With the help of the General Assembly and the Governor, we hope to close these gaps and use our Loan Repayment Program to help do so.

Are you an advanced practice registered nurse looking to make an impact in communities that need it the most here in Georgia? The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Loan Repayment Program (APRNLRP) offers an opportunity to serve communities across the state while receiving assistance with your education loan debt.

Through the program, licensed APRNs may receive a service-cancelable loan of up to $10,000 per year to help repay outstanding education loan debt.

Program Highlights:

• Up to $10,000 per year toward eligible APRN education loan debt
• Recipients may reapply each year for a maximum of four years
• Each year of funding requires a one-year commitment to work full-time in an eligible community
• Service must be completed in an underserved, rural Georgia county with a population of 50,000 or less

Yesterday, the Georgia Board of Healthcare Workforce had the privilege of attending the Morehouse School of Medicine’s Government and Policy Leadership Forum alongside Georgia stakeholders from the federal, state, and local level.

Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice and Interim Dean Dr. Sandra Harris-Hooker graciously welcomed us and led a day full with presentations from MSM faculty, researchers, and partner organizations. The range of perspectives shared from community health and maternal care to research innovation and workforce pipelines gave everyone in attendance a comprehensive look at the excellent work MSM is doing across the state and beyond, and their commitment to building a workforce rooted in the communities it serves.

The afternoon tour of the Research Laboratories and the Morehouse Medicine Clinic was a highlight that gave us a closer look at the translational research and patient care happening on campus every day. We also want to highlight one of our Board Members, Dr. Kitty Carter-Wicker, who currently serves as the Director of the AUCC Student Health and Wellness Center, and thank her for graciously showing us around the facility.

Thank you to the entire Morehouse School of Medicine team for a well spent day and for the important work they do on behalf of Georgia and our communities.

Are you a nurse faculty member in Georgia with a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Nursing? You may be eligible for up to $25,000 in student loan repayment through our Nurse Faculty Loan Repayment Program!

Eligibility: Must hold a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Nursing

Employment: Must be currently employed and have at least 1 year of faculty experience with an eligible Georgia institution, including the University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia.

Award: Up to $25,000 over 2 years

Payment Schedule:
• Year 1: Up to $10,000 (40%)
• Year 2: Up to $15,000 (60%)

The Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce (GBHCW) is committed to strengthening access to health care across rural Georgia by helping physicians build rewarding careers in the communities that need them most.

Through GBHCW’s service-cancelable loan repayment programs, eligible physicians can receive assistance with educational expenses, including tuition, fees, and other qualifying costs, while making a meaningful impact in an underserved rural Georgia community. Participants fulfill their service commitment by practicing full-time in an eligible county with a population of 50,000 or less.

In this Board Member Spotlight we recognize Dr. Garrett Bennett, a lifelong Georgian who has spent 22 years practicing rural medicine. After graduating from the Mercer School of Medicine, Dr. Bennett completed his residency at Phoebe Putney in Albany in 2004, he then began practicing family medicine in Blakely and has now spent the past 12 years at Miller County Hospital. These experiences led Governor Brian P. Kemp to appoint Dr. Bennett to the Georgia Health Care Workforce Board (GBHCW) in 2021, and his contributions to the Board have been invaluable.

Dr. Bennett has a passion for introducing students to rural healthcare. He said he has precepted students from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Mercer University, PCOM, and other programs, including physician assistant (PA) and nurse practitioner students. For him, the experience is about more than what students see inside a medical practice. When students work with him, he encourages them to experience the surrounding community as well, including basketball and football games, church, and other community events. He explained that physicians in smaller communities can hold a particularly visible role.

“You’re still looked at as a community leader and someone who, as a result of that, has the opportunity to make an impact in the community, not just purely from a medical perspective, but to make the community itself a better place to live and more productive.”

His connection to the Board’s work is personal as well. Dr. Bennett once benefited from federal and state loan repayment programs while practicing in qualifying rural areas. During medical school, his wife, Dana, who had already completed physical therapy school, helped support their living expenses, an experience he describes as something they went through together.

“I say ‘we’ because it is just that. It wasn’t just me, it was both of us.”

Today, Dr. Bennett brings those experiences to his work as a physician, mentor and Board member dedicated to Georgia’s rural healthcare workforce. He and Dana have been married for 29 years and are the proud parents of three daughters. Please join us in thanking Dr. Bennett for all the time and contributions he has given to the Board, helping progress the goal of Georgian's having access to the healthcare professionals they need.
