Atlanta volunteers spruced up Dr. King’s Birth Home Block — where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood.

Dr. King’s wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, once said that the greatest birthday gift her husband could receive would be for people to celebrate his holiday namesake through individual acts of kindness and service to others.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was the first federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service.

Special thanks to our volunteer groups, MADIOC-Making A Difference In Our Community and Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) for honoring Dr. King’s legacy through action and service.

MLK, Jr.’s National Historical Park Celebrates his U.S. holiday – The National Park Service site held a block party event on Historic Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, GA. Visitors could walk through several historic buildings including Ebenezer Baptist Church and Fire Station No. 6 – our Temporary Visitor Center.

Visitors took pictures and technology-driven exhibits educated them on the place where Dr. King was born, lived, worked, worshipped and is buried. Symbolic marches also took place outside of the park in remembrance of his non-violent strategy in the Civil Rights Movement.

Happy 97th Birthday, Dr. King!

Gospel music saturated Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church – The 97th Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was celebrated this past Saturday with musical tributes from local Atlanta and Southern gospel artists paying homage to Sweet Auburn's local son who went on to make history in the Civil Rights Movement.

Special thanks to the King, Williams, and Orange families for curating the artists. Gratitude to the musical and spoken word performers who made this a truly memorable experience. We had church on Auburn Avenue.

Dr. King’s great niece reads to Atlanta schoolchildren at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Today Farris Watkins led an annual book reading in observance of her great uncle Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 97th birthday in the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he once preached.

This special book reading of “My Brother Martin”, written by Farris’ grandmother, Christine King Farris (Martin Luther King, Jr’s sister), connected the audience to Dr. King’s childhood in the Sweet Auburn community and the roots of the Dr. King who impacted the world through nonviolent social justice movements.

Farris’ late grandmother, Christine, hosted countless book readings with the youth, especially for her brother’s birthday in the same fashion to underscore the importance of reading and education.
