Friends of Erskine

Friends of Erskine was created to restore Atlanta's first public water fountain, and is supported by the Grant Park Conservancy.

The Erskine Memorial Fountain was dedicated in 1896 and is Atlanta's first public water fountain, located in Grant Park. Friends of Erskine is sanctioned and supported by the Grant Park Conservancy and Atlanta Preservation Center with the goal of the complete restoration of this beautiful, historic work of public art. This project seeks to restore the Erskine Memorial Fountain by replacing missing pieces of the metal fountain and restoring it to a working state. Further, it will improve the surrounding elements including the marble bench, granite entryway walls, the historic Grant Park overlook, and the surrounding surface areas. We were happy to attend the Grant Park Conservancy's unveiling ceremony at Erskine Fountain yesterday, celebrating the beautifully renovated Courtyard and landscaping surrounding the fountain, and the installation of historical signage about the park, created in partnership with Kennesaw State University's Department of Museums, Archives, and Rare Books, and the Park Public History Project board. Well done!

Additionally, be sure to check out the historical signage that's been installed up at the Southeast Quadrant of the park too!

Step 1: Increase the green space! Tear out excess asphalt & move the curbs inward to create a slimmer walkway
encircling the fountain. This will make more room for plantings in the surrounding space.

Hello friends! The time has come: Grant Park Conservancy is about to break ground on Phase II of the Erskine Fountain project: restoring the space behind the fountain, the Abana Courtyard.

GPC has raised an impressive $200,000 to the project, but the total cost is estimated at $230,000, including reclaiming the courtyard, shoring up the walls, installing permeable pavers, managing drainage issues, & expanding the greenspace.

None of the restoration work done so far would be been possible without the support of friends and neighbors like you. Our Story

The mission of the Friends of Erskine is to restore the Erskine Memorial Fountain and the surrounding area to create a public space for all to enjoy.

The fountain was given to the City of Atlanta in 1896 by Ruby Ward in memory of her father, Judge John Erskine, and is Atlanta's first public water fountain. Originally located in downtown Atlanta, it was relocated to its current location in Grant Park in 1912. The Friends of Erskine is a group of community members sanctioned and supported by the Grant Park Conservancy and the Atlanta Preservation Center.
