Coast Guard Cutter Pablo Valent stationed in sunny Saint Petersburg, Florida! We are the 48th Fast Response Cutter in the fleet, and our primary missions include but are not limited to PWCS (Ports, Waterways, and Coastal Security), Defense Operations, Maritime Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Marine Safety, and environment protection. Our namesake Pablo Valent (Jan 15th, 1892 - Sept 5th, 1969)
was a member of the United States Life-Saving Service best known for his part in the rescue of the schooner Cape Horn in 1919. During a hurricane which made landfall outside Corpus Christi in September 1919, Valent was part of a boat crew credited with the rescue of the endangered schooner Cape Horn. According to the official account of events, watch standers at the U.S. Life Saving Station 222 spotted the Cape Horn in distress, whereupon the station's 36 foot Type E oar-powered surfboat was launched into the hurricane force swells. The surfboat reached the vessel two hours later, just as the Cape Horn began to sink, and safely rescued all aboard. For his efforts, Valent was decorated with the Silver Lifesaving Medal and also received the Grand Cross from the American Cross of Honor.
